Points of Interest in the 2013 Faculty and Alumni European Tour
Day 1: Enroute to Frankfurt.
Day 2: Arrived in Frankfurt, (driver was Daniel Bialla)saw the Berlin Airlift
Memorial Bridge. Spent the day in Heidelberg. Introduced to Doner Kebabs. Dinner
at the Schnookelloch , an old student pub in the city.
Day 3: Toured Heidelberg, including the castle. Guide was Isabel, the lady with the
parrot on her head. Traveled to Strasbourg, walked the grounds of Chateau de
Pourtales. Dinner at the local Weinstube (wine pub).
Day 4: Toured downtown Strasbourg (guide was Catherine), including the
cathedral, and a canal boat ride. Dined on Flammenkuchen in the evening. Some
enjoyed a wine tasting in the afternoon.
Day 5: Traveled to Munich via the Black Forest with a stop in Freudenstadt. Visited
Dachau, the first concentration camp. Walked down the famous shopping street in
Munich, (Kaufingerstrasse) and had dinner at the Hofbrauhaus.
Day 6: Traveled to Berchtesgaden. Visited the Kehlsteinhaus (Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest)
and Obersalzerg Documentation Center, and then toured the Salzbergwerk (salt
mine). Then went to Salzburg, Austria. Had dinner at the K&K restaurant and
enjoyed Austrian cuisine.
Day 7: Enjoyed Salzburg. Some took the Sound of Music Tour. Some took
advantage of the Salzburg Card . The Arch Bishop’s fortress and palace, the
cathedral, Mozart’s birthplace and residence, and the Getreidegasse (grain alley).
Day 8: To Garmisch-Berchtesgaden. Visited Schloss Linderhof and Ettal Abbey. Had
dinner at the Werdenfelserhof and enjoyed a Bavarian meal with folk dancing show.
Day 9: To Neueschwanstein via Wies Kirche. Spectacular view from the Marien
Bridge overlooking the castle. On to Nurnberg. Dinner at the Oberkrainer (a
Slovenian restaurant).
Day 10: Visited the Palace of Justice (Documentation Center) where the Nurnberg
War Crime Trials were conducted. Visited Rothenburg (a shopping experience).
Had dinner in the medieval castle of Burg Colmberg. On to Frankfurt for overnight
stay.
Day 11: Took train to Paris. Visited Champs Elysees, Arch of Triumph, (saw Moulin
Rouge), and had dinner at Montmarte. Visited the Sacre Couer.
Day 12: Visited Versailles, lunched in the village, visited the Eiffel Tower.
Day 13: Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre Museum, final dinner at Les Noces de
Jeannette.
Day 14: Returned to U.S.A. via Charles de Gaul Airport
