LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE Name Michelle McGuire Date 8-2-04 Standard: Students understand the role of rules and laws in our daily lives and the basic structure of the US Government. (History-Social Science 3rd Grade) Objective: The student should be able to develop awareness and determine the importance of rules and regulations and how they function in daily life. Syntax of the Model of Teaching Description of the Lesson Motivation The element of surprise and the unknown. Give the students temporary freedom as a social experiment and see how they function and if they can make their own rules and regulations. Technological Enhancement Input of Information (how and why, what mode and with what kind of aides) Tell students that in 5 minutes they will travel to a different planet that looks exactly like our classroom. They will only be there for 10 minutes, and will be invisible to me, so I won’t be able to see or hear them (even though I’ll still be in the class). When I give the signal, time starts and the same signal indicates the end of their space travel. When time is up, class resumes as normal. Play a space travel soundscape that has the premise of the classroom experiment. Checking Comprehension (did they understand, do you need to input in a new way?) Allow students to ask any questions about the exercise until the 5 minute grace period is over. After 2-3 minutes into the exercise, Structured Practice (in a structured way to insure write a question on the board that the students must answer during their time success) in “space” such as: “As a group, decide upon one space travel artifact to bring back to Earth and give 3 reasons why the group chose it.” Guided Practice (in a more difficult way to really show you they are grasping the concept) Jul. 2004 Have the questions played as a part of the space soundscape 2-3 minutes after space travel starts. After the 10 minutes are up, and the Have the goal played as part of the class presents their artifact, repeat the soundscape. exercise, but give them a goal to achieve during the exercise and time to think about it before their 10 minutes starts. “You will be given an all access pass back the planet you just visited, but in order to keep it, you must pick 4 different people to be in charge of the planet and describe their duties.” Closure ( how do you bring to a close and sum up what learning was to take place) After students present their 4 leaders, After time is up, have reflective ask the student how they came to their questions played out on the decisions. Ask them how this relates to soundscape. everyday life, and what life would be like if there were not rules or regulations to follow. Guide their discussion to focus on the importance of leaders, how rules are made, and the importance of following rules for social harmony. Explain how this relates to the colonists and how they had to come up with a new government. Point out the similarities between the leaders that the class chose and how that relates to the government that we have in our own country. Formal/Informal Assessment (reflection of degree some students reached the objective.) Have the j students write a single paragraph reflection on their experience and as them to include one new thing that they learned as a result of the activity. Jul. 2004
