Course Description and Prerequisites Students will be integrated into the service as a member of the surgical team, participating in all aspects of patient management, both inpatient and outpatient. The student will be expected to complete at least 40 hours per week on the service. Participation in night call is required because many cases come in after hours. Housing is not provided for this elective. Students will participate as an integral member of the SICU team to enhance skills of analysis and judgment important in the optimal management of complex critically ill surgical patients. They will be responsible for formulating daily progress notes using ICU worksheet and evaluating post-operative ICU patients from all surgical services, including cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, general surgery, and vascular surgery. Remediation plans could entail some (or all) of the following examples: Additional clinical shifts, research papers, presentations, article reviews, exams, directed reading, web-based modules, etc. If the student performance results in a failure of the elective, it will be recommended that the elective be taken again in its entirety. Attendance and Make-up Policies Date Created/Revised: _____ By: _____ TAMHSC – COM student handbook states: Students who miss more than 20% of a 4th year elective for any reason (2 weekdays during a two-week rotation or 4 weekdays for 4 week rotation) will require a remediation plan. However because elective schedules often vary considerably from a standard academic schedule, and students are often requesting extended time off during the interview season, each elective director is encouraged to consider your own attendance and remediation policy. Other Pertinent Course Information In house call will be every third night. Students are expected to attend all 911 and 922 activations without exception. Students will respond to all requested ED consults when notified by attending physician of need in the ED. 1. Students will perform exam and appropriate H & P on all admitted patients while on call. They will continue to follow these patients daily until discharge. 2. Morning checkout M – F will be held in trauma office at 0730. Weekend checkout will be at the discretion of the attending surgeon on call. 3. Students will pre round on all inpatients prior to attending morning checkout and be prepared to intelligently discuss the patients including all pertinent information and test results. 4. Students are strongly encouraged to read on their respective patient’s diagnoses and treatment prior to attending morning report as they will be quizzed daily on rounds about their patient’s injuries. A large portion of their grade will be determined by their performance on daily rounds. 5. Each student will be assigned to a specific attending surgeon on weekly intervals. After morning rounds and report, students will shadow their respective assigned attending surgeon for the remainder of the day.
