Poetry Gallery Walk: “Last Snow” by Heid E. Erdrich
In her poem “Last Snow,” Heid E. Erdrich uses personification and a metaphor to talk about the final
snowfall of the season and create a reflective mood. Erdrich uses a variety of literary devices to create a
nostalgic mood in her poem, including personification. For example, Erdrich states that as it falls, the snow
makes “a music in the streets we wish we could keep” (line 4). The poet personifies the snow by describing its
descent as making “music,” as if the snow is singing a song for all to enjoy. This use of personification appeals
to the audience’s sense of nostalgia as the reader remembers their fond memories of times in the snow.
Therefore, the author uses personification to establish a reflective tone. Additionally, the author also uses an
example of a metaphor. The author uses this comparison between the sun and his feelings to distinguish the
happiness he felt: “the sun was a reflection of my joy” (line 3). This comparison between his joy and the sun
clearly demonstrates his happiness radiating. This use of a metaphor appeals to the audience’s sense of mutual
joy, as the poet sounds so happy that this spreads to the reader. Therefore, the author uses personification and a
metaphor to connect with the readers emotions and establish a nostalgic tone.
