COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to continue the development of the Spanish language and knowledge of cultural
practices and traditions. Students who have successfully completed Spanish 1 with a minimum score of C or
better are admitted. The course is aligned with the California State Standards and the Common Core Standards.
All activities and lessons are tailored to meet one or more of these standards. Emphasis is on continued
development of the four major language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In addition to these
skills, students will explore the many facets of culture and heritage in Spanish-speaking countries. Students are
expected to participate in Spanish.
GPS INTEGRATED CURRICULAR FOCUS:
The six themes of the National Standards as posted in the classroom will be integrated throughout all four years
of World Language study. Using the target language, these themes will be explored through authentic realia
such as art, music, fashion, theater, geography, literature, current events, and culinary delights. This will
therefore allow students enrolled in the GPS program to engage in a variety of cultural aspects of the target
language they are studying.
COMMON CORE: In the World Language courses we are creating inquiry-based classrooms, in which students
are challenged to explore ideas, interact with text, and develop thoughtful and logical understanding of their
world in the target language. The key to literacy is the idea that every instructor teaches reading, writing,
speaking and critical thinking in a classroom that integrates the four through discussion, exploration and
problem solving.
EQUAL OPPORTUNITY: Folsom High School is committed to equal opportunity for all individuals. Activities
shall be free from discrimination based on gender, race, color, religion, national origin, ethnic group, marital or
parental status, physical or mental disability or any other unlawful consideration.
HOMEWORK:
Homework is assigned weekly. Students are expected to complete the work that corresponds with the lesson
taught in class for further practice. Homework must be correctly completed for points. No late work will be
accepted!
TESTS:
Quizzes are given between exams to check for understanding of vocabulary and grammar from each lesson.
Exams cover the entire lesson or unit and are comprehensive (vocabulary, grammar and culture). Make-ups
must be done within 1 week and during PAWS. Please check with me for the make-up date.
METHOD OF EVALUATION:
Rubrics are generally used for projects and essays. Evaluation is based on the percentage of the total points
possible. Everything is given a point value: homework, participation, projects, exams, quizzes, etc. The
following is the grade scale:
90-100% = A
70-79.99% = C
<60% = F
80-89.99% = B
60-69.99% = D
ATTENDANCE/TARDIES:
Students are expected to attend class regularly. Poor attendance results in a loss of participation/citizenship
points. If the absence cannot be avoided, it is the student’s responsibility to find out from a classmate what
was assigned in class, to check the Schoolwires website http://www.fcusd.org/Domain/3245 or ask the teacher
if all other options have not been helpful. A class tardy will result in a loss of participation points and detention.
More than three tardies will adversely affect the citizenship grade. See http://www.fcusd.org/Page/18379
(course expectations) for my policy.
SCHOOL RULES: Campus rules and policies in the PAWS Port will be adhered to in this classroom; see
appropriate pages for a detailed list. Remember that no food, drink, or gum will be allowed; all electronic
devices and accessories must be turned off and placed out of sight during class; and all staff will be enforcing
the school dress code throughout the entire school day.
CITIZENSHIP: School and classroom rules are in your PAWSPORT. Consequences for inappropriate behavior
in class may include rule reminders, verbal warnings, detention, parent contact, or class suspension depending
on the circumstances. Evaluation of a student’s citizenship is based on two principles:

The World Language classroom is a place for students and teacher to explore and experience the target
language and culture and to behave in a manner that allows this to happen.

People and their property have the right to exist unharmed. Please be respectful.
Semester Citizenship Grades will be based on the following:
 O Student demonstrates outstanding attitudes and/or behaviors toward class, subject, teachers and
fellow students.
 S Student demonstrates acceptable attitudes and/or behaviors toward class, subject, teachers and
fellow students.
 N Needs improvement. Student sometimes behaves in ways that do not support the principles of the
class.
 U Student’s attitude and/or behaviors seriously interfere with classroom instruction.
*A key difference between Satisfactory (S) and Needs Improvement (N) is whether or not you correct
inappropriate behavior with one or two gentle reminders. If you cannot do this, then you will receive an (N) or
(U).
MAKE-UPS:
Work missed due to an excused absence must be made up upon returning from an absence! All tests are due 1
week upon returning from an absence. The only exception would be assignments given during the absence
which would be due the following day unless they are designed to be completed over several days. Extended
absences of three or more days will be made up according to the instructor’s directions. As always, it is the
responsibility of the student to find out what assignments were missed. Long-term assignments which are given
five or more days in advance are due on the day specified, regardless of absences between the day assigned
and the day due.
EXTRA CREDIT:
Students are given a limited amount of extra credit opportunities and should not miss these chances.
MATERIALS:
Students are expected to bring their (covered) textbook to class on a daily basis together with their PAWSport,
spiral notebook, binder, workbook, pens, and binder paper. At home, students should have index cards (to
make flashcards).
TEXTBOOK/MATERIALS RESPONSIBILITY:
Students are financially responsible for lost or damaged school textbooks and/or materials!!!!!!!!!!!!
A donation to the World Language department is appreciated to help offset costs of the workbooks and other
items used for this program and to maintain the quality of the World Language program we have here at FHS.
CHEATING: Cheating will be defined as using someone else’s efforts in place of your own or providing work for
someone else. Consequences for all individuals, both receivers and providers, involved in cheating will receive
a zero on the assignment in question. Examples include letting a friend copy your work, providing answers to a
test, or printing two copies of work produced on a computer. All students at Folsom High School are held
accountable to the school wide Academic Honesty Policy as stated in the PAWSPORT. Please consult the policy
for a detailed list of what constitutes cheating and consequences for each step. A single instance of cheating
counts as a Step 1 Offense and follows a student throughout their entire class schedule and through all of their
years at Folsom High. The next instance (even if in a different class or years later) counts as Step 2.
**All electronic devices must be put away in your backpack during tests. If you have any of these
devices out during a test it’s an immediate zero on that test.
