COURSE DESCRIPTION: Study Skills is a course recommended for RSP students who qualify for
special education services. This course is designed to help students with organizational skills,
study skills, goal setting, and provide time for assignment completion. This course provides
students with the opportunity to work on homework with teacher support. However, there is not
enough time during this class to complete all that is assigned. It is expected that students will
spend additional time on homework/assignments and studying each day outside the classroom.
This course also will provide mini lessons, as time allows, that will help improve study habits and
organizational skills.
FCUSD COMMON CORE MISSION STATEMENT: Creating inquiry-based classrooms, in which
students are challenged to explore ideas, interact with text, and develop thoughtful and logical
understandings of their world is the common goal in all subject areas. The key to literacy is the
idea that every teacher teaches reading, writing and critical thinking in a classroom that integrates
the three through discussion, exploration and problem solving.
GPS INTEGRATED CURRICULAR FOCUS: Current cultural events will be discussed in class in an
effort to prepare students to be informed and responsible world citizens.
EQUAL OPPORTUNITY: The Folsom High School program is committed to equal opportunity for
all individuals in education. District programs, activities, and practices shall be free from
discrimination based on race, color, ancestry, national origin, ethnic group identification, age,
religion, marital or parental status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender,
gender identity or expression, or genetic information; the perception of one or more of such
characteristics; or association with a person or group with one or more of these actual or
perceived characteristics.
HOMEWORK: Study Skills is a support service for special education students and as a result,
homework is not generally assigned. However, students will periodically be given tasks to
complete outside the classroom such as obtaining a monthly grade check and bringing to class a
current cultural event article prepared for discussion. Each student is required to bring a reading
book to be kept in class or brought to and from school each day in the event that they do not have
any homework.
TESTS: No tests are required in this class.
METHOD OF EVALUATION: Evaluation for Study Skills will be based on weekly points given for
student preparedness, effort, attitude, and behavior. Students are required to bring their
PAWSPORT and any necessary material (books, notebooks, notes, pencils, pens, markers, etc.) to
class each day. Failure to come to class prepared will result in the loss of daily points. Detention
and/or class suspensions may be issued for being chronically unprepared. Points are given each
week as follows.
45-50 points
=A
35-39 points
=C
40-44 points
=B
30-34 points
=D
0-29 points
=F
ATTENDANCE/TARDIES: Regular attendance is critical for success in this or any endeavor.
Students are responsible for being on time to class daily and keeping requests to leave the
classroom at a minimum. To avoid being considered late or tardy, student is to be in his or her
assigned seat when the bell rings. Unexcused class “lates” and/or “tardies” will result in
escalating consequences in accordance with Folsom High School’s Late Policy outlined below. This
policy is semester based and resets with the start of the second semester.
1st late and 2nd late: teacher’s discretion
3rd late: 50 minute detention
4th late: 50 minute detention; teacher contacts parent
5th late: teacher suspends student for the class period; teacher contacts parent; administrative
staff meets with student
6th late: teacher suspends student for two class periods; teacher contacts parent; administrative
staff meets with student
7th late: teacher suspends student for two class periods; parent, student, teacher, and
administrative staff conference
SCHOOL RULES: Campus rules and policies in the PAWSPORT will be adhered to in this
classroom; see appropriate pages for a detailed list. Remember that no food, drink, or gum will
be allowed; all iPods, cell phones and accessories must be turned off and placed out of sight
during class; and all staff will be enforcing the school dress code throughout the entire school day.
CITIZENSHIP: Grades shall be assigned by each teacher. These marks set behavior standards
that describe an appropriate educational environment for all students. See PAWSPORT (p15) for
marking system.
MAKE-UPS: All assignments are due immediately upon returning from an absence. The only
exception would be assignments GIVEN during the absence. A student who has an excused or
non-truant absence or who receives an in-house suspension will be allowed to complete all
assignments and exams missed during the absence that can be reasonably provided. A STUDENT
WITH AN UNEXCUSED ABSENCE(S) MAY NOT MAKE UP MISSED WORK.
When you return following an excused absence: Student will have two days for each day
absent to make-up work and shall not receive a consequence to the absence if turned-in within
the make-up due date. It is the student’s responsibility to request the work assigned during an
absence and to clarify with the teacher when the make-up work is due.
EXTRA CREDIT: No extra credit will be accepted in place of missed participation or organization
points.
MATERIALS: Students should have 2 – 3 blue or black ink pens, a sharpened pencil with an
eraser, 2 – 3 highlighters, PAWSPORT, a personal reading book and homework assignments from
other classes all to be brought to class every day. If a student consistently fails to bring supplies,
necessary notes, handouts, assignments, and/or assigned book to class, the teacher may initiate
consequences. Rough and final drafts of writing assignments and reports must be typed or wordprocessed. Computers are available in the library during PAWS for student academic use.
TEXTBOOK/MATERIALS RESPONSIBILITY: Student is financially responsible for any and all
books and resource materials provided to them. This includes any damage as well as loss and will
be billed accordingly. Payment for lost or damaged materials must be taken care of at the
Student Accounts window.
CHEATING: Cheating will be defined as using someone else’s efforts in place of your own or
providing work for someone else. Consequences for all individuals, both receivers and providers,
involved in cheating will receive a zero on the assignment in question. Examples include letting a
friend copy your work, providing answers to a test, or printing two copies of work produced on a
computer. All students at Folsom High School are held accountable to the school wide Academic
Honesty Policy as stated in the PAWSPORT. Please consult the policy for a detailed list of what
constitutes cheating and consequences for each step. A single instance of cheating counts as a
Step 1 Offense and follows a student throughout their entire class schedule and through all of their
years at Folsom High. The next instance (even if in a different class or years later) counts as Step
2.
