TOK NOTES by: Daniela Blanchet 01/17/03 "To know" Brainstorming: 1. to fully understand a concept (basics, at least) 2. competence to explain that concept to someone else (is it true?) 3. To be able to perform a task 4. To be able to at least recognize a concept 5. To use in practice (for the benefit of you or others) -not requirement, general statement 6. To be familiar with a person (different levels of familiarity exist: ex: recognition of physical qualities or personality) 7. To have an opinion ( Questionable as definition) 8. Personal experience 9. Belief of the time and that community (could be taught or observed) 10. To have common sense (derived from experience or observation of other's experience or just hearing that something is harmful) ( Common sense: Ex: one knows not to touch a hot stove when hot so that they don't get hurt don't cross busy steet push/pull door drugs are bad (depends on it's use) after seeing someone dying from eating something - don't eat it (makes us not eat want to eat something that looks bad) -ability to stay out of harm's way -knowledge of normal or common things (this can range from culture to culture)) 11. to perceive something Known formula: a^(n -1)= 1(mod p) -works for any prime number (don't use 0) and divide by 7 to get a remainder of 1 -used for credit cards -derived in the 1700's Levels of Understanding 1. to be aware semi fully
