Health 2015-2016 Health Requirement and Course Syllabus Welcome to a new school year at ED9 where our mission Statement is to provide a respectful, safe, and supportive environment. ED9 will provide relevant, rigorous, and blended learning experiences built on a foundation of high expectations and critical thinking to prepare students to compete in and positively contribute to a global society. With that in mind, this course will help you gain knowledge to prepare you to succeed in the future. In this class, our goal is for you to acquire the health information and skills necessary to become healthy young adults and to learn about behaviors in which you should or should not participate. To achieve this goal, you are expected to learn the following in this course: A) You should first seek guidance in the area of health from a parent B) How to use problem solving, research, goal-setting and communication skills to protect your health and that of the community. C) How to recognize health risks to make decisions about personal behavior D) Your personal behaviors can increase or reduce health risk throughout your lifespan E) Your health is influenced by a variety of factors F) Be able to recognize and utilize health information and products to improve your health G) Good personal/interpersonal skills are needed to promote individual, family and community health Throughout the semester, we will cover the following topics in class: Health Promotion and Fitness Dating Relationships Substance Abuse Communication Skills Decision-Making Skills Puberty and Reproduction STD’s (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) Consumer health Abstinence Human Sexuality Resistance Skills Life Skills Diseases Nutrition *Note some of these topics are quite sensitive, therefore will require parent permission. Classroom Expectations (Rules) Respect others and their opinions. Be honorable: Don not lie, cheat, or steal. Be on time and in your seat when the bell rings. Have daily supplies ever day. Maintain a positive attitude and be productive. No: Sleeping, texting, personal grooming, gum, chewing, eating, or working on assignments for other classes. Classroom Guidelines: Behavior- Students are expected to behave in a mature manner maintaining a respectful level of interaction with each other and with the instructor. Students are expected to comply with the District and Campus Codes of Conduct, and Dress Code at all time. You will respect other students by listening to them while they are speaking or responding to questions and by not interrupting/disrupting class. Everyone has a right to an education, but you do not have a right to disrupt the class and/ or deprive other students of an education or interfere with the instructors’ ability to conduct the class. If you choose to disrupt the class you will be dealt with using appropriate disciplinary measures. You are expected to exercise self discipline. Please have and keep all cell phones, iPods and any other electric devices off unless being used for educational purposes. The instructor will let you know when the use of these items is permitted during class. Violations of the “Classroom Expectations” and /or “Classroom Guidelines” will be dealt with using the following consequences. Consequences: Warning Student/Instructor Conference Parent or Guardian Called In Person Student/Instructor/Parent Conference Administration Intervention( Office Referral) Daily supplies: Students will need the following supplies with them in class everyday Pen or Pencil Blue or black ink Composition Book (1) Materials- You are required to have the following supplies: 1 Box of Kleenex, 1 Composition Book, 1 Ream of Colored Paper, 1 Ream of White Copy Paper, 1 glue stick, 1 pair of small scissors, 1 pack of markers. Attendance- Students are strongly encouraged to attend class on a regular basis (every day). In the event that you are absent, assigned homework is due when you return. Any missed class work and /or homework is due the next class period following an absence (1 day absent= 1 day to make-up) It is the student’s responsibility to obtain any missed work as soon as possible. Failure to complete assignments doesn’t excuse you from any quizzes or tests. Grading Policy- Assignment will be graded and assigned a weight using the guidelines below. 50%- Daily assignments, and Homework 30%- Quizzes, Tests, and Projects 20%- Nine Weeks Test Make-up Quizzes or Tests- Students should make an effort to take missed quizzes or tests as close to the original quiz or test date as possible. Redo Assignments- As per SISD Administration Regulation EIA, it shall be the student’s responsibility to seek the opportunity to redo an assignment or test for which he/she received a failing grade within five school days upon which he/she received notification of a failing grade. The grade earned when redoing an assignment or test shall be averaged with the grade earned on the first attempt, and the averaged grade shall replace the failing grade. Students shall be given one opportunity to redo a failed assignment or test. If you are involved in any extra-curricular activities or sports, you need to pass this class- if not; you still need to pass this class. Please keep up with your assignments 9 turn them in on time), study for quizzes and tests, as questions, participate in discussions, and take notes. Cheating/Plagiarism- Cheating, copying or plagiarism will not be tolerated. Any students involved in this type of activity could face disciplinary action (i.e. office referral) and may lose credit for the assignment. Note: In my class, copying notes from a friend is not considered cheating/plagiarism so long as they are not a graded assignment. In fact, in my class it is strongly encouraged if you have been absent. Please do you r own work. Don’t work on assignments in pairs or groups unless I specifically tell you it is ok to do so.
