The Interactive Healthy Eating Index (IHEI) is an online dietary assessment tool that includes
nutrition messages. After providing a day's worth of dietary information, you will receive a "score"
on the overall quality of your diet for that day. This "score" looks at the types and amounts of food
you ate as compared to those recommended by the Food Guide Pyramid. It also tells you how
much total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium you have in your diet.
Each HEI score gives you an idea of the quality of your diet from what you ate: for one day or for
up to 20 days. An HEI score over several days gives a better picture of your eating habits over
time.
The IHEI program is based on the Healthy Eating Index developed by the U.S. Department of
Agriculture's Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion. The Healthy Eating Index measures how
well the American diet complies with the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans
and The Food Guide Pyramid.

stored on your computer. Different Internet browsers - such as Netscape Navigator and Microsoft
Internet Explorer - store information known as "cookies" in different places. If you access this site

Session Time-out
Another property of this site that is common to most Internet sites is that your session will "time out"
after a certain period of inactivity. We have set this site to allow up to around 45 minutes of inactivity,
which should be plenty of time for you to make your selections and review your results. If your
session times out, simply click on the screen where indicated and you can resume where you left off.
Bear in mind that your food selections are saved on your computer as soon as you make them and
that the quantities you enter must be processed at least once in order to be saved.

Welcome! To use the IHEI system, enter a User Name of your choice along with
you’re age and gender, and then click "Save". Selections that you make while using the
site will be saved locally on your computer. These selections will be automatically
recalled by the system the next time you visit and supply the same User Name. Age
and gender information are needed because dietary requirements vary among
different age and gender groups and your level of physical activity. The HEI and
nutrient intakes are based on a person who is moderately active. Click personal
