Dear Parents,
Below you will find the overview of the curriculum that all 2 nd
grade students will receive during the second 9 week instruction. Students will receive a grade based on a scale of 100. An average of 70 or higher shall be considered a passing grade.
English Language Arts / Reading
We will work with vowel digraphs (exp. ie, ue, ew) and dipthongs (oi,ou)
Ending stable syllables (exp. -tion and -ble) and R- controlled words (per-fect and cor-ner)
We will learn about prefixes (-un, -dis) and suffixes (-ly, -less, -ful)
Contractions (isn’t, can’t) and Abbreviations (Mrs. Ave. Mr.)
Read 300 high frequency words
We will make and confirm predictions
Ask questions, locate facts and details to support with text evidence
Know the purpose for reading selected stories
Use multi-meaning words and putting words in alphabetical order.
Read stories that are fables, legends, myths, and folktales.
Comparing different versions of the same folktale.
We will describe how rhyme, repetition, and rhythm create images in poetry.
We will be going over drama and identifying elements of dialogue.
Making inferences and describing character traits.
Describing similarities and differences in the plots and settings of several works by the same author.
Literal and non-literal meanings of words and phrases
We will write short poems, short stories and learn how to revise and edit
We will work on punctuation and writing legibly.
We will learn how to use apostrophes and contractions.
We will work with verbs (past, present, future), adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns
Distinguish between declarative and interrogative sentences.
Fluency Goal: 75 words per minute
Math:
Addition (add up to 4 two digit numbers)
Subtraction (two by two digits)
One Step and Multistep problems.
2-Dimensional Figures and 3-Dimensional Figures
Fractions (More fractional parts = smaller parts) (Fewer fractional parts = larger parts)
Naming fractions using words, halves, fourths, and eighths.
Fractions beyond one whole.
Examples and non-examples of halves, fourths and eighths.
Basic Math Facts within 20.
Solving and creating word problems.
Classify and sort polygons with up to 12 sides.
Science:
We will be doing outdoor investigations and collecting data.
We will use tools such as hand lens, primary balances, thermometers, and non-standards units of measurement.
We will investigate the effects on an object by increasing or decreasing amounts of lights, heat, and sound energy.
We will observe and identify how magnets are used in everyday life.
We will compare patterns of movement of objects such as sliding, rolling, and spinning.
We will identify natural resources and how to conserve and dispose of them properly. (Such as conserving and recycling)
We will observe, describe and sort rocks by size, texture and color.
We will compare properties of natural sources such as freshwater and saltwater.
Distinguish between natural and manmade resources.
Social Studies
Historical Figures: Irma Rangel, John Hancock, Theodore Roosevelt, Paul Revere, and Women Airforce
Service Pilots.
Characteristics of good citizenship.
Functions of the government and how they establish order.
Government services, such as policemen, fire protection, and libraries etc.
We will learn how the government taxes citizens and why.
We will learn current officials, such as the mayor, governor, and president and compare their roles.
We will learn about voting and elections.
How do we participate in the government and how do we stay informed.
We will go over national holidays like Veterans Day and Thanksgiving.
Creating maps of school and community.
Obtaining information by using different sources like expository pieces and the internet.
Projects (Technology) : We will create a brochure of the different types of government (Mayor,
Governor and President) and what their responsibilities and roles are.
