Attending class allows you to listen to spoken German and to develop your own speaking skills in conversation with your instructor and peers. Come to every class, come prepared, and participate. Free Conversation Classes You are encouraged to attend the twice weekly free conversation classes offered by our PAD assistant, Leonie Heines, who speaks a beautiful German. Quizzes We will have 4 quizzes (worth 5% each). The quizzes are short, are written at the beginning of the regular class hour, and test you on the material covered up to that point. The dates for the quizzes are January 20; February 3; March 9; and March 23. Midterm: Wednesday, February 17 2 The 50-minute midterm (20%) tests you on all the material covered up to that point. You will write it during class time. Oral Exam In the penultimate week of classes, you will meet with your instructor in her office (SN-3051) for 10 minutes. During this period, you will read aloud, do a few grammatical exercises, and carry on basic conversation. You will be given the reading passage, examples of grammatical exercises, and a list of questions well in advance, so that you can prepare yourself for the exam. You will be graded on your ability to use correct German pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Final Exam The final examination will be written during the examination period (April 11-20), the exact date to be determined by the registrar’s office. Since language acquisition is a cumulative process, the final exam will test you on all of the material covered during the term. Syllabus Disclaimer We will attempt to follow the schedule below.
