Verizon Communication Inc. is an American broadband and telecommunications
company. Verizon is the second largest US telecommunications services provider. Verizon
provides wireless, telephone, Internet and television services to mass market, business,
government and wholesale customers. Verizon services more than 80 million customers
nationwide. Verizon provides many different languages to customers in their own language,
including Russian, Spanish, Mandarin, Korean, Vietnamese, and Cantonese. Verizon also has
two Centers for Customers with Disabilities that provide services for customers. According to
the official Site, Verizon Corporate Responsibility Officer Magazine named Verizon one of the
100 Best Corporate Citizens for 2008.
Verizon was founded in 1983 as Bell Atlantic Corporation by AT&T Corporation. In
1996, CEO and Chairman Raymond W. Smith orchestrated Bell Atlantic's merger with NYNEX.
Bell Atlantic acquired GTE on June 30, 2000 and changed its name to Verizon Communications
Inc. The company's headquarters are located at 140 West Street, 10007, in Lower Manhattan,
New York City. The current Chairman and CEO is Ivan G. Seidenberg, President and COO is
Dennis F. (Denny) Strigl.
Verizon has developed environmental policies such as Energy Conservation and
Recycling programs. The Energy Conservation programs works for reducing greenhouse gas
emissions in order to protect environment and reduce energy costs. Verizon is helping curb
energy use by using clean-burning fuel cells, micro turbines and Hypalon roof. Moreover,
because the developmental of e-commerce and distance services in network, Verizon reduces
paper usage by using paper-free billing and the need for travel. Verizon has a waste reduction
and recycling program to help reduce waste and recycle marketable materials. Verizon
contributes money to American Forests for eTree program which plant trees on behalf of Verizon
shareholders. Verizon collects used wireless phones and wireless phone batteries to recycle,
recycles office paper and cardboard, and repaired and defective equipment.
Verizon Communications establishes Verizon Foundation which addresses social and
economic needs in diverse communities. This grant focuses on literacy and education initiatives,
technology and workforce development programs, and domestic violence solutions. Verizon
Foundation encourages its employees and customers to donate their time, money to nonprofit
agencies to help build stronger, sustainable communities. In 2008, 11,000 nonprofits received
time and money and 3,021 competitive grants awarded overall from Verizon employees and the
Foundation.
Verizon wants to provide a great place to work. The company respects every employee’s

In 2007, Verizon employee logged 11.5 million training hours for management techniques and
other technology skills and invested $371 million. Verizon pays 100 percent of approved tuition
and fees at accredited institutions of higher education. Verizon also provides a better health care
to employees. Verizon spends nearly $4 billion on health care every year. In 2007, the company
spent 4 percent of revenues for about 900,000 employees, retirees and dependents. Ninety-four
percent of eligible employees have chosen health coverage.
Overall, Verizon Communications has great corporation citizenship such as corporate
culture, the relationships with charitable organizations, environmental policies, diversity policies,
career opportunities and employee benefits.
