The Intolerable Acts Judy Kariuki Background information • • • • After the French and Indian War, Parliament was in large debt so they issued new taxes without the consult of the colonists. This lead up to the Boston Tea Party The Boston Tea Party (1773): protest by colonists in Boston against the tea tax imposed by the British Government. Boston patriots, dressed as Mohawk Indians, raided three British ships in Boston harbor and dumped 342 containers of tea into the harbor. The intolerable acts • • The Intolerable Acts (the Coercive Acts):a series of British laws, passed by the Parliament in 1774. Some specifically aimed at punishing the Massachusetts colonists for the Boston Tea Party. The Intolerable Acts • • • Closed the port of Boston until the tea that had been destroyed at the Boston Tea Party had been paid for. Suspended the right of self-government in the Massachusetts colony. Banned all town meetings that didn't have approval of the royal governor. • Forced colonists to supply British soldiers with food and shelter. (This was also called the Quartering Act) The colonists reaction • • • • • Other colonies stepped in to help. Newspapers publicized articles about the British rule and these unfair acts. Protests ( Violent & Non-violent). Colonists boycotted British goods. First Continental Congress met to discuss the acts.
