Students must be familiar with division terms found on division vocabulary sheet

Students must be able to explain the relationship between division and subtraction, as
well as division and multiplication.

Students must be able to translate division expressions into 3 different formats :
56 ÷ 9
=
56
=
9 56
9

Students must be able to use the appropriate vocabulary to label a division problem
written in any one of the 3 formats:
41 ÷ 8 = 5⅛
41 is the dividend
8 is the divisor
5⅛ is the quotient
1 is the remainder; we only express it as a fraction!

Students must be able to divide dividends that are multiples of 10, 100, 1000, etc. by
divisors that are multiples of 10, 100, 1000, etc.
EXAMPLE: 480,000 ÷ 800 = 600

Students must be able to estimate quotients using the concept of “friendly numbers”
EXAMPLE:
547 ÷ 7
123 ÷ 12
560 ÷ 7 = 80
120 ÷ 12 = 10

Students must be able to solve division problems using the Four Step Problem Solving
Method; students must be able to determine what to do with the remainder for specific
problems (keep, round, drop) and explain why.

Students must be able to divide with one digit divisors. Remainders are expressed as
fractions – in lowest terms!
