Dec.2nd Students must be familiar with division terms found on division vocabulary sheet Students must be able to explain the relationship between division and subtraction, as well as division and multiplication. Students must be able to translate division expressions into 3 different formats : 56 ÷ 9 = 56 = 9 56 9 Students must be able to use the appropriate vocabulary to label a division problem written in any one of the 3 formats: 41 ÷ 8 = 5⅛ 41 is the dividend 8 is the divisor 5⅛ is the quotient 1 is the remainder; we only express it as a fraction! Students must be able to divide dividends that are multiples of 10, 100, 1000, etc. by divisors that are multiples of 10, 100, 1000, etc. EXAMPLE: 480,000 ÷ 800 = 600 Students must be able to estimate quotients using the concept of “friendly numbers” EXAMPLE: 547 ÷ 7 123 ÷ 12 560 ÷ 7 = 80 120 ÷ 12 = 10 Students must be able to solve division problems using the Four Step Problem Solving Method; students must be able to determine what to do with the remainder for specific problems (keep, round, drop) and explain why. Students must be able to divide with one digit divisors. Remainders are expressed as fractions – in lowest terms!
