Why I didn’t do what I wanted to do SELF-COACHING Self-coaching is a procedure to decrease anxiety by understanding one’s own signs of anxiety (such as increased heart rate or sweaty palms) and then coaching oneself to relax. For example, ‘I am upset about this situation, but I can control how anxious I get. I will take things one step at a time, and I won’t focus on my fear. I’ll think about what I must do to finish this task. This situation will not be forever. I can manage until it is over. I’ll focus on taking slow deep breaths.” THOUGHT STOPPING Thought stopping is a self-directed behavioral procedure learned to gain control of self-defeating thoughts. Through repeated systematic practice, a person does the following: 1. Says “Stop” when a self-defeating thought crosses the mind (e.g. “I’m not smart enough” or ”I’m not a good nurse”) 2. Allows a brief period (15 to 30 seconds) of conscious relaxation. ASSERTIVE BEHAVIOR Assertive behavior is the open, honest, empathetic sharing of your opinion, desires and feelings. Assertiveness is not a magical acquisition but a learned behavioral skill. Assertive persons do not allow others to take advantage of them and thus are not victims. Assertive behavior is not domineering but remains controlled and non-aggressive. An assertive person: Does not hurt others Does not wait for things to get better Does not invite victimization Listens attentively to the desires and feelings of others Takes the initiative to make relationships better Remains in control or uses silences as an alternative Examines all the risks involved before asserting Examines personal responsibilities in each situation before asserting
