Biology Notes Dr. Hensley / Mrs. Ingram November 2015 Cell Membranes Cell Membrane – Hold cell together and regulates what goes in and out of the cell. It is flexible (fluid). Phospholipids – What the cell membrane is made out of. Proteins are stuck in the cell membrane to help transport nutrients for the cell’s functions Outside of cell – Water Present Head Loves Water Tails Hate Water Inside of cell – Water Present Endocytosis – “Into” “Cells” – Movement of stuff into the cell Exocytosis – “Out” “Cells” – Movement of stuff out of the cell Protein Channel for transporting across the membrane Where Does Water Go? Hypertonic (More)(Solute)- Has more solute outside of the cell than inside. When there is more solute outside of the cell, the cell will send water outside and cause the cell to shrink. Hypotonic (Low) (Solute) – Has more solute inside of the cell than outside. When there is more solute inside the cell, water will enter the cell and cause it to swell and possibly pop. Isotonic (Same) (Solute) – The inside and outside of the cell have the same amount of solute present. Water will go in and out of cell equally and the cell stays the same size. Extra Information: Phagocytosis – “Eat” – the process of taking a large solid piece of food into the cell Pinocytosis – “Drink” – the process of taking in liquids into the cell
