Nist & Carole Mohr 3-ring binder (loose leaf notebook) & loose leaf paper, pens, pencils, erasers, highlighters – English-English dictionary (Recommendations: Longman Advanced American Dictionary) Course Description: EAP 1421 – Reading Level 4 - (3 credits) is an intermediate II college-level course designed to develop the student’s ability to read text on contemporary and literary topics with an emphasis on extensive reading and the enhancement of critical reading skills. Course Competencies: The student will read a variety of texts of varying lengths on contemporary and literary topics with some fluency and speed emphasizing vocabulary expansion. The student will distinguish between main ideas and supporting details in simplified texts and/or authentic texts at high intermediate level. The student will use a variety of textual clues, e.g., sentence connectors, signal words, and pronoun reference to understand and discuss the meaning and structure (i.e., patterns of organization) of a text. The student will enhance the ability to apply the following critical thinking skills when reading: a. Understand the meaning of new vocabulary through: 1) Context clues, e.g., synonyms, antonyms, examples, definitions, and restatements, etc. 2) Roots and affixes b. Analyze text, e.g., simple outlining and note taking, summarize, draw conclusions, apply information to personal experience c. Recognize facts and opinions. The student will identify common cultural references. Attendance Policy: You should come to every class in order to obtain the most complete educational experience. Participation in this class is only possible if you attend class. If you arrive late to class it is your responsibility to notify the instructor at the end of class in order to change your absence to a tardy; otherwise you will be marked absent. Please note: 3 consecutive absences = student automatically dropped 4 absences = student automatically dropped 3 late arrivals = 1 absence Participation Participation is an integral part of the learning process. ENGLISH ONLY is spoken in our classroom and active participation is stressed in order to help you improve your reading, writing, and oral communication skills. Your success in improving your English skills will depend very heavily on your ability to practice English every minute that you can. Homework Homework must be done on the day that it is assigned. You may be required to turn it in or to use it for an in-class assignment or activity. NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. GRADING Attendance & Homework Exams Final 10 % 70 % 20 % Exams No make-up exams allowed unless you have prior permission from me.
