Required Textbook and Materials Elbaum, Sandra, Grammar in Context, Book 1 (5th Ed.), Thomson/Heinle loose leaf paper and folder to keep your assignments No. 2 pencils for tests, ink pens for assignments Scantron sheets for tests Course Competencies and Objectives use simple sentences (S+V+C/O) use questions with WH-interrogatives use compound sentences (but, and, or, so) use complex sentences showing sequence or reason (after, before, when, because) use parts of speech and phrases with appropriate word order: 1. Irregular plural nouns 2. Count and non-count nouns 3. Noun phrases with quantifiers (some, many, a lot of, any much) 4. Nouns as objects 5. Subjects, object and possessive pronouns, and possessive adjectives 6. Adverbs of frequency and manner 7. Prepositional phrases use verbs, modals and related phrasal forms in affirmative, negative, question and short answer forms: 1. Simple present vs. present progressive 2. Simple past of regular and high frequency irregular verbs (inc. there was/were) 3. Simple future (will / be going to) 4. Have to/Need to (need/obligation) 5. Students need to study at home every day and do all the homework. It is impossible to do well in this course without a lot of individual study time. If you do not understand a lesson, come to my office immediately, and I will help you. The final grade in the course will be A (100-90), B (89-80), C (79-70), D (69-60), F (59 or below): Attendance and class participation Homework assignments Tests and Final Examination 10% 15% 75% Note: Alternate tests will not be given. The final examination cannot be taken before or after the exam date. Attendance and Punctuality Come to class on time and attend classes regularly. If you are late or absent, your grade goes down. If you are absent for 3 consecutive lessons, you will be dropped from the class. More than 4 absences can result in a drop or a failing grade. If you are not in class during attendance check, you will be marked absent. You must see me after the class so that I mark you late. In the final grade, 2 late arrivals will count as 1 absence. But you will be marked absent if you arrive 20 minutes late. Cell phones Turn off your cell phones during the lesson. Phones and beepers may not ring nor be answered during the lesson.
