Dear Students, Parents and Guardians:
Welcome to the Family and Consumer Sciences Department at Smart’s Mill Middle
School. I am excited that you will be part of our learning experiences this
semester. This course is designed to develop responsible and positive attitudes
relative to the students’ role in society. Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS), is
an exploratory program with activities created to implement life experiences.
Students will explore concepts and practice skills which focus on personal
development, clothing, and food management.
Family and Consumer Sciences support the related Virginia Standards of Learning
(SOLs) for English, social studies, mathematics, science and technology. Through
lab experiences and simulated activities, your child will have a unique opportunity
to achieve and learn using higher order thinking. Emphasis on writing skills and
reading strategies will be incorporated to meet the course objectives.
There is an $18.00 lab fee to cover supplies for projects done in class. This fee is
due the first week of the semester so that we may order supplies in time to begin
our units of study. Payment may be made by cash or check. Checks should be
made payable to Smart’s Mill Middle School. Please send cash or check in an
envelope labeled with your child’s name and class period.
