“The Giver” by Lois Lowry is a science fiction novel set in a
utopian future world. After centuries of war and strife, the
community rulers base everything on “sameness” in order to keep
peace. The main character Jonas however, learns that “sameness”
means humans give up individuality and true happiness. He risks
his life to leave the only world he knows. Lowry uses several
literary techniques to support the theme that individuals cannot
know true happiness without choices.
