Throughout Lowry’s “The Giver” symbolism and
conflict play an important role in theme development.
The characters remain lifeless in the utopian
community where there are no choices or individual
freedom. As Jonas undergoes his training to become the
next Giver, the reader witnesses the conflict he must
endure in order to live a meaningful life. It is his final
choice, one of his only choices that leads even to the
possibility of his own personal fulfillment. The stark
contrast of his journey to the community he leaves
behind makes the theme discernable to the reader.
