Newsletter 10/11-10/16 Dear Families: Thank you for coming out in participating in Curriculum Night. The Shepherd staff enjoyed discussing what we have been learning in the classroom. Additionally, thank you for your support in making this fall's Scholastic Book Fair a success. Speaking of support, a school fundraising letter was sent home and was distributed on Curriculum Night. The letter is asking for Shepherd families to make contributions to help raise funds to aide in providing much needed resources for our school. This is a one time fundraising drive this year. Your donation would be greatly appreciated and beneficial to the students. Those families who are sending in donations with your students, if you could kindly attach the completed donation form with your contributions. This week in Social Studies we worked with our new Wordly Wise vocabulary. Students played word games, created sentences, and used the iPad minis in their quest to master the set #2 round of words. Also, we began our study of the Native Americans through a text book introduction of the various tribes. We will be doing group projects in class on the tribes this week too. On Monday, we will begin commemorating Columbus Day with a lesson on his expeditions and his influence on the age of exploration in the "New World." In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month and our study of push/pull factors in migration and immigration, we have been reading aloud Pam Muñoz Ryan's Esperanza Rising. The students have been reviewing their reading strategies such as a cause and effect, character details, and making inferences, while listening and discussing this critically acclaimed true story. Please send in any box tops for education labels that you may have. This program is an excellent and convenient way to raise funds for schools. Hurry up before they expire! If you have not had the opportunity to set up a conference, please contact me to make arrangements before the quarter ends. Please be advised that we can also arrange a phone conference if that is more convenient. Have a great week. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Jennifer O'Connor
