Newsletter 12/6-12/11 Dear Families: This past week we began our Wordly Wise lessson#6. We will continue our study of #6 and will be using the iPad minis to help in our practice with the vocabulary. Students this past week began learning about the 13 original colonies. The classes learned about life in the New England and Middle Colonies. This week we will learn about the Southern Colonies. We will continue our study through Discovery Ed. videos and the use of Social Studies Weekly. Students will also be creating a pamphlet/brochure to represent one of the 13 colonies, we will we working on it in class and they will be presenting to their peers. The classes completed our read aloud of Esperanza Rising. We discussed how authors' use of dialogue, names, and words give readers clues about the setting and culture of the story and characters. Additionally, we worked on our reading comprehension skills through our use of Social Studies Weekly, reading passages from Reading Works, and Ticket to Read. For extra practice in math, we used activities from Sunshine Math, that covers a variety of problems using the skills the students are learning this year. Our goal is to use this more often so that the students can get additional practice and reinforcement of the math concepts. Important Dates: 12/9 Early Release day for students. 12/18 Last day for students. 12/19-1/3 Winterbreak Please return your signed progress report if you have not done so already. Lastly, I want to say how great it was to see all our Shepherd families at Winterfest. Your support was appreciated and we hope your families enjoyed the evening. Have a great week! Jennifer O'Connor
