ANNOUNCING THE OTTW PROJECT! PROJECT DUE DATE: A-day Thur 11/5, B-day Friday 11/6 CELL ANALOGY POSTER You will be creating a cell analogy poster to show to other current and future seventh grade science classes and to feeder elementary schools (Algonkian, Potowmack, Countryside, Horizon) during their fifth grade cell unit. The purpose of this activity is to give a creative opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge of the different organelles and structures in a eukaryotic cell. It is meant to be educational and accurate, but should also be fun! I challenge you to be as creative as you can! RULES/REQUIREMENTS: 1. Projects must be turned in on some sort of display board/paper (poster board, butcher paper, etc.) 2. Projects will be worth 100 points as an assessment (about 20% of your first quarter grade). 3. You will be using plant as your model cell. 4. Choose topic for analogy. (Ex. The cell as a city- you cannot use this idea.) 5. You must include each of the 12 organelles in your poster and list and explain the analogies. 6. Some work on the projects will be done inside of class. 7. Please see the rubric on the back of this page for more specific grading details. 8. You will need to turn in a planning table that includes the following information, before your final project to get feedback from your peers. This table MUST be turned in on or before A-day Thursday, 10/22 or B-day, Friday, 10/23 Organelle Function Can be compared to… Because they both… Example: If the plant cell was like a kingdom then… Organelle Function Nucleus DNA Control center of the cell Instruction manual for cell Can be compared to… Because they both… The castle The nucleus controls the cell’s functions and contains DNA. The castle controls the kingdom and contains the queen. The Queen DNA contains the instructions for making proteins and enzymes, which repair the cell and drive cell processes. The queen’s brain contains all the information needed to make decisions to run the kingdom. This text will then need to be made in to a poster illustrating the kingdom with a castle, a queen, and artisans. What does a quality analogy look like? Does the analogy for this structure/process make sense? Are the two things truly comparable? Does the illustration (picture) reflect my explanation? Rubric Organelle Organelle Labeled (1 point) Analogy Drawing (2 points) Analogy Explained (2 points) Analogy Appropriate (1 point) Nucleus DNA Nucleolus Endoplasmic Reticulum Chloroplast Lysosomes Vacuoles Ribosomes Mitochondria Cell Membrane Cytoplasm Cell Wall Total Other: /72 Earned Possible Planning Table Turned in on Time and Complete: 5 Participated in Gallery Walk: 10 Overall Creativity, Effort, and Attitude 13 (Analogies, Colorful, Neat, Organized, Positive Attitude, Best Effort Etc.)
