Criterion B: Developing Ideas
Level 3 My Career Investigations Design Project
Criterion B, Objectives 1 and 2
1. I can develop a design specification, which outlines the success criteria for the design
of a solution based on the data collected.
2. I can present a range of feasible design ideas, which can be interpreted by others.
Evidence of Work - Classwork and Homework
Describe, discuss, and analyze your Criterion B, Objectives 1 and 2 Evidence of
Work. Be very thorough and cite specifics as you answer questions, provide information, and
follow instructions. This objective may be completed individually and/or cooperatively by using
our Think-Pair-Share blended learning strategy. To clarify, each student is responsible to
complete a document, but may work with a classmate to work on their two documents together.
Show the teacher your Completed Criterion B, Objectives 1 and 2 Evidence of Work and Process
Journal document by the date announced in class.
1. Brainstorm the possible solutions (products). Create a list of five or more different
products or ways that this project “may” be completed in Criterion C – Creating the Solution.
What are different ways we could discover information about 3d printing and then present or
show our learning? (FYI: The reason the word “may” is in quotes because for Criterion C,
you will be completing Pitsco’s 3D printing unit. Completing your Engineering Notebook
will serve as your “plan).”
2. Check the solutions (products) you have brainstormed, using a test (checklist) and also
write an overview about each of your three solutions (products).
a. Select three of your solutions or ideas from your brainstormed list in #1 above
b. Compare and contrast your three selected solutions or ideas about how to learn and present
information about 3D printing. For each solution, list ten or more specific steps or things that
you will need to do to successfully research information and then present or show your findings.
Either create a chart or table like the one below or create a different design digitally or by hand
(e.g., flow charts, bubble maps, drawings with descriptions, etc.). Check each product with your
itemized checklist, with an appropriate response (Yes/No, or check mark or X, or smilies, etc.).
Your chart or design serves as a test or checklist. Your answers will compare three products.
Which product meets your test or checklist the best? Analyze carefully whether every component
of your checklist can be covered in each possible product.

Criterion B, Objectives 1 and 2 Process Journal
1. In two or more sentences, discuss why it is helpful and important to narrow-down a list of five or
more ideas or solutions to three for and analysis and evaluation.
2. In two or more sentences, explain how creating an initial plan, by creating step-by-step checklist
of things to do to successfully for your project, assist you with analyzing, and comparing and
contrasting, your three ideas or solutions.
3. In two or more sentences, discuss how exploring and listing some pros and cons of each solution
or idea provides additional data and therefore, assists you with comparing and contrasting
your three products.
***For a classwork grade, show your Criterion B, Objectives 1 and 2 Evidence of
Work and Process Journal document from your laptop by the date announced in class.
Criterion B, Objective 3
I can analyze a group of similar products that inspire a solution to the problem.
Evidence of Work - Classwork and Homework
1. For Objective 3, you will compare and contrast different views (called concepts), examine
and analyze a mind map, and complete a decision matrix by following instructions on pages
2-7 of your Engineer Notebook. Competition Rules, list of parts and materials, resources, and
glossary from the Competition Catalog are available. You and your partner – or team –
should work these pages together, with each person completing the data in her or his own
Engineering Notebook. When completed, (1) show your sketches to the teacher for a
classwork grade and (2) return here to compose a paragraph of ten or more sentences,
summarizing, detailing, analyzing, evaluating, and reflecting about your learning experiences
from completing these activities: Initial I. Also, discuss any IB and global connections, along
with your thoughts about “seeing the bigger picture.”
Criterion A, Objective 3 Process Journal
1. In a paragraph of five or more sentences, discuss and analyze the Competition Rules that are
listed on pages 2-3 of your Engineering Notebook.
2. Answer each of the following questions for reflection. How did you feel about what you
have done so far for your project? Was it satisfying? Frustrating? Rewarding? What has gone
well? What have you learned so far? What needed to be improved? What other reflections do
you have at this stage of the project?
Criterion B, Objective 4
I can develop accurate planning drawings/diagrams and outline requirements for the
creation of the chosen solution.
Evidence of Work - Classwork and Homework
Describe, discuss, and analyze your Criterion B, Objective 4 Evidence of Work. Be very
thorough and cite specifics as you answer questions, provide information, and follow
instructions.
1. Copy/draw or trace (with a sheet of tracing paper the Mind Map on page 4 of your
Engineering Notebook. Then examine your Decision Matrix on pages 5-7, especially the two
Decisions to Be Made charts on page 7. From both charts together, you should have a total
of six Important Things. Use your words from both your two Decisions to Be Made and your
six Important Things – and with a different colored pencil or pen, carefully write and insert
them where you think that they belong on the Mind Map. You may write on your drawn or
traced map, or write on the outside areas of your paper and use lines and/or arrows to point
where they belong in the context of your Mind Map.
Criterion B, Objective 4 Process Journal
1. In three or more sentences, detail how the Mind Map on page 4 was a useful tool for you.
2. In three or more sentences, discuss and give examples of how inserting Decisions to be Made
and Important Things worked (or not). What did you learn from this experience?
3. In a paragraph of four or more sentences, reflect, analyze, and evaluate your use of Criterion
B: Developing ideas - of the design cycle. What are your strong points with Criterion B?
What did you did you like the best? What would you do differently if you had to do it over?
(You may make any changes, additions, improvements, corrections, etc., right now to
improve the quality of your work!)
***DO NOT COPY/PASTE THIS AND THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION FROM YOUR GOOGLE
DOC TO THE TEXT ENTRY FORM AT THE ASSIGNMENT'S WEBPAGE AT CANVAS!!!
There is no peer review/evaluation form with Criterion B, but you are encouraged to have a
peer check your work before handing it in. Revise and proofread your work. What are your
strengths and opportunities for improvement? Did you go above and beyond meeting minimum
expectations and requirements? Does your work also consider the big picture, global
perspectives, international mindedness, etc. Are your responses thorough and specific?
At Google Drive, use both spell check and your brain to correct errors in spelling,
capitalization, sentence structure (e.g., subject/verb agreement), and other standard English
grammar issues. Please use standard English. For example, use "and," not "&;" capitalize "I," etc.
Are your paragraphs indented properly (approximately five to eight spaces)?
*When submitting a project's criterion document at Canvas:
a. Use the original form that you were directed to copy and paste onto a Google doc and follow
all instructions on both the criterion document and here. If not, a submitted assignment will be
unacceptable and may result in a temporary 0-50 until the document is resubmitted correctly.
b. At this assignment's Canvas webpage, click the Submit Assignment button at the top.
c. Copy your entire criterion document on Google Drive and paste it in the Text Entry box.
d. As you proofread your work again, make sure that your first/last name, class block, and date
handed in are accurately typed at the top of the page.
e. Fix any formatting issues:
1. Select/highlight all text and select font size 12.
2. Then scroll up to the top of your document. As you slowly scroll down, read and correct
any formatting issues, including spacing between lines.
3. Please keep all text left aligned.
4. Use of color on titles/headings and answers are optional. Titles/headings may be in
bold. Answers are to be in plain text (not bolded). Questions, directions, etc. are to be black
color. If the colors are too bright or light and difficult to read, a submitted assignment will be
unacceptable and may result in a temporary 0-50 until the document is resubmitted correctly.
5. Add borders to both charts or tables by clicking inside the table. Then click the down
arrow by the Table icon, then click Table Properties, type 1 inside the box for Border, and click
OK. If the charts or tables are without borders, a submitted assignment will be unacceptable and
may result in a temporary 0-50 until the document is resubmitted correctly.
6. Using the Comments section is optional, if you want to explain something, share ideas,
remind the teacher of specific dates you were absent from class, etc. Then click the Submit
Assignment button at the bottom and if applicable, hand in any printed or hand-created
paperwork with your name and class block type or written on each sheet. Next, begin Criterion
B.
