MOHANDAS K. GANDHI
He was the leader of the independence movement in India. He used
non-violence to fight for independence. He wanted equal treatment
for all Indians. He was called the Mahatma or Great Soul of the
Indian Independence Movement. Shot to death by a Hindu
extremist.
JAWAHARLAL NEHRU
Prime Minister of India for 17 years. He was a devoted follower of
Gandhi. He emphasized democracy, unity, and economic
modernization. He dealt with a dispute between Kashmir and Pakistan.
He formed an alliance of countries that were neutral in the dispute
between the U.S. and Russia.
KWAME NKRUMAH
He was a leader of the non-violent
freedom movement in the Gold Coast. (Ghana) He organized strikes and
boycotts. He became the first Prime Minister of Ghana. He wanted to
create an Africa ruled by Africans. He hosted the first Pan-African
meeting which led to the Organization of African Unity.
JOMO KENYATTA
A Kenyan Nationalist. He was arrested and jailed by the
British for not condemning the Mau Mau organization. He
became President of Kenya after the country gained
independence. He worked hard to unite the various ethnic and
language groups in Kenya.
NELSON MANDELA
He was a member of the African
National Congress fighting for the rights of Black South
Africans. He spent 27 years in prison for his armed struggle
against white rule in South Africa. He was released in 1990 and
elected President in 1994 in South Africa’s first universal
elections, in which people of all races could vote.
