A Field Guide to the Endangered Species of the Animal Kingdom Date Due: _________________________ Field Trip date to the Zoo: _______________________ Objective: Create a book that showcases animals that are currently listed as endangered. You must include at least 5 different “Classes” of animals (ex. Mammalia, Reptila, Pisces, Crustacea, Amphibia, Aves, Insecta, Gastropoda.) Your booklet will contain ten individual pages of different animals organized on a graphic organizer. Procedure: 1. Decide which 10 endangered species you would like to select for your Zoobook. Remember you must choose animals from at least 6 different “Classes” from a classification standpoint. A template has been provided for you on my webpage to help you format the information required below for each page of your book. 2. A cover, table of contents and reference page. 3. In the upper right hand corner of each species page write what “Class” and the “Order” the organism belongs to (ex. Humans are in the Class Mammalia, Order Primates.) 4. Above the illustration or photograph, write the organism’s common name (Mocking bird) and scientific name (Mimus polyglottus). Be sure the scientific name is underlined or in italics and that the first name (genus) is capitalized. 5. Next to the illustration or photograph identify two characteristics of the organism that make it unique and use arrows to point to the field marks. (“legs,” “wings”, etc. are not field marks). Example: alternate leaves or eye stripe 6. Under the illustration or photograph, write or type the following information: - Relatives (other members of the chosen taxa; a closely related species) - Predators or Prey of your species - The diet of your species. What type of consumer is it and how does it obtain its food? - Habitat – where does your species live? - Adaptations – how is this organism specialized to survive in its habitat? - Why has this species been endangered? (Deforestation, overhunted for fur, Climate change, etc.) - How does your species reproduce? o Is reproduction sexual or asexual? o Internal or External fertilization? o How does your species give birth? (Eggs, live birth) o How many offspring does your species have? (on average) - One interesting fact - Citation for your picture and information
