Parent Tips: Ways to work with your school What can you expect staff at your child’s school to do about bullying? • Staff will meet with your child to learn about the bullying that he or she has experienced. They will explore a plan to help keep your child safe, and they will be watchful for any future bullying. Educators will assure your child that they will work hard to see that the bullying stops. • Give the school reasonable time to investigate and hear both sides of the story. Educators will not jump to hasty conclusions and assign blame without a thorough assessment of the situation. The issue will be resolved as soon as possible. Parent Information on LCPS Bullying Prevention LCPS’ Bullying Prevention Program Purpose Loudoun County Public Schools are implementing a county wide positive behavior intervention support bullying prevention program to teach our students how to identify bullying behavior and appropriate ways to handle bullying. Ken Culbert Elementary will be implementing this program in grades K-5 guidance lessons and activities. What is bullying? 1. Bullying is an act of aggression in the form of: hitting or punching (physical bullying); teasing or name-calling (verbal bullying); intimidation using gestures or social exclusion (nonverbal bullying or emotional bullying); sending insulting messages by phone or computer (email: cyberbullying). 2. Bullying is behavior that is: Repeated Intentional Has an imbalance of power “Stop, Walk, Talk ” Every LCPS student in grades K-5 will be taught what bullying is and how to respond to bullying behavior. Our 3 step program is called “Stop, Walk,Talk.” 3 STEPS TO STOP A BULLY! STOP WALK TALK Students should be taught that if they experience or observe mean behavior they should tell him/her to “stop”. Sometimes, even when students tell others to “stop”, problem behavior continues. When this happens, students are to "walk” away from the problem behavior. Even when students use “stop” and they “walk” away from the problem, sometimes students will continue to behave inappropriately toward them. When that happens, students should "talk" to an adult.
