All students will read fluency passages for the AIMS web screening. The PALS and DRA assessments will be given if a child did not meet the benchmarks in September. Starting in January, second graders will work on long vowel patterns in our word study words. This is a skill needs to be reinforced often. If your child is using a pattern that we have studied, he/she is responsible for applying it in writing. Math News In December, we practiced adding double digit numbers. This month we will subtract double digit numbers. It is very important for second graders to know basic facts to complete these skills. We practice our facts many ways daily in the classroom, please be sure your child is also practicing at home. Second graders love using the Reflex math program. There are also a variety of apps and websites if just using flashcards becomes monotonous. Thank you for your help in this area! Content News The classes will enjoy learning about magnets in science! The kids love getting to test materials to see if they are or are not magnetic. At the end of the month, we will identify the 7 continents, 5 oceans, and begin our study of Ancient Egypt. Important School Reminders Be sure to review with your child what he/she is to do in the event that school closes early. At the beginning of the year you filled out an early dismissal form. As the winter weather approaches, be sure to check the local news and radio stations, as well as the Loudoun County Public Schools website for up to date closing information. More School Reminders Before the winter break, our school had many different sicknesses going around. Please be sure to not send your child to school if he/she is sick. It is also important to continue to encourage healthy habits at home like washing hands. Please remember, if you send your child with any medication to school it needs to go through the clinic. This includes cough drops. Thank you!
