Epicenter is the point on the Earth’s surface that is directly above the focus of an earthquake. Focus is the point underground where the earthquake begins. Continental Drift is the slow movement of the Earth’s continental and ocean plates. Tsunami is a tidal wave theat sometimes occurs with an earthquake. Weathering is the breakdown of rocks caused by erosion or deposition. Erosion is when rocks, etc. get carried away. VOLCANOES Magma is hot molten rock underground. Lava is magma that is above the ground. Pillow Lava- round, solid formations formed when lava cools underwater. Ring of Fire are the volcanoes around the Pacific Ocean that form a ring. Some are active and some are dormant. MINERALS Minerals are found naturally in the earth and are not living. Minerals are classified by luster, hardness, and streak. Moh designed a hardness scale to classify minerals based on easily they scratch. Moh’s hardness scale gives Talc a #1 for being the softest and gives diamond a # 10 for being the hardest mineral. Examples of minerals are diamond, quartz, and talc.
