Algebra 1 Ms. Frye 2014 -2015 Welcome to Algebra! This course is the first high school math requirement for graduation and the foundation for higher level math courses. Like any skill or talent, such as playing a sport or a musical instrument, a committed attitude along with a willingness to work and practice regularly is key to success. Plan to be busy and engaged throughout class, come through the door in Math Mode. Also, schedule time outside of class to do homework (resource, lab, b4/after school, at home). Get extra help when needed ASAP to avoid problems! Scope & Sequence Here's a general outline for the year: Quarter 1: Expressions & properties, square & cube roots, solving equations, statistics, linear functions Quarter 2: Functions con’t, graphing/writing linear equations & their application, direct and inverse variation, mid-term exam Quarter 3: Systems of linear equations, polynomial operations, Quadratic functions and applications Quarter 4: Quadratics functions & applications con’t, SOL prep, compound inequalities, absolute value, geometry prep, final exams & projects Grading : There are two types of assessments, one weighted, one not. Both are an important part of the learning process!! Formative assessments check for understanding, can be graded but carry no weight. Some examples include class/group work, homework, exit tickets, reviews and small projects. Formative grades are based on completion and accuracy with a score of 0-4. Summative assessments are 100% of your grade and can include Quizzes, Tests and larger projects. Your course grade is determined by these assessments. These grades are points earned divided by total points possible. Points are generally earned in the following ways: Tests are 50-100 points Quizzes are 20-50 points Projects 20-30 points Re-teaching / Retesting Policy: All students who receive any summative grade of 69% or below must retake the assessment within 2 weeks from when the assessment was handed back/grade was given. Before a retake can occur, students must follow the below steps. 1) 2) 3) 4) Schedule and attend re-teaching session. Bring your original assessment and math binder to this session. Make assessment corrections with me following guidelines listed below. Complete additional practice such as IXL (smart score 70) or other assigned work. After completing steps 1-3, arrange the retest within two weeks from the date the grade of the assessment was given. Test Corrections for Retake Guidelines: 1. Use a separate sheet of paper. 2. Write original problem and show all work. 3. Circle correct answer. 4. Write an explanation to tell how you fixed the error. Homework: Plan on it every class and schedule time into your day! Most homework will be on worksheets or IXL and you will use your notes with example problems as a guide. Check the homework hotline if you need to know the assignment. Materials Each student needs some kind of filing system (i.e. a 3 ring binder) to keep organized. Bring materials to class every day! Minimally, you need: One 1” or 1 & 1/2” 3 ring binder with 5 dividers (warm-ups, notes, tests/quizzes, cw/hw, sol) Pencil - every day!!! Calculator - (we have TI-84 graphing calculators for the classroom) Highlighter (optional) We have a classroom set of textbooks. Online textbook is available. If you want to reference it go to classzone.com create a student account & choose high school/math/VA then 2007 Algebra 1.
