Herzlich Willkommen in Deutsch 1! Welcome to German 1! Instructor: Frau Dorsey Room A-11 laura.dorsey@lcps.org Course Overview: The ultimate goal of any language class is to learn to communicate in the target language. In order to achieve fluency, one must develop four key skills: speaking, listening, writing, and reading. Our objective this year is to begin the first steps toward fluency in all four skill areas, as well as deepen the student’s knowledge of German culture, geography, and specific grammatical structures. Materials: 3-Ring Binder OR Multi-subject Binder with “German 1” Section* Loose leaf notebook paper Pens and Pencils *This class does not rely on the textbook. Your student’s German notebook is their textbook! Summative Evaluation Policy and Procedures: Quizzes: Quizzes are given daily/every other day and are used to evaluate vocabulary, spelling, grammatical structures, compositions, and speaking assessments. Small projects, class work, and homework will also count towards your final grade. Quizzes are typically 20 to 25 points each. Tests/LCPS Benchmark Assessments: There will be a final summative assessment at the end of each quarter. These assessments may be in the form of a performance evaluation (testing all four skill areas), large individual/group project, or county-standardized benchmark assessment. The standardized benchmark assessment for German will be at the end of 2nd and 4th Quarter. Every German student county-wide will be taking the same assessment. Assessments will be given online through the Interactive Achievement testing program. The benchmark format is based on the AP (Advanced Placement) German Exam, which students have the option of taking when they reach high school. These assessments are typically 50 points. Quarterly CPAs CPA is short for Communicative Performance Assessment. These are standardized by the county and are given once a quarter. Students are required to speak for an entire minute uninterrupted on a specific topic. Students must also write an essay of 100 words on a different topic. CPAs are typically 50 points. Re-take Policy: For information on Mercer’s school-wide retake policy, please see the attached document. Lunch with Frau: Sometimes it is necessary for students to spend their lunchtime with me. For example, a student may have: Missing Assignments (Homework/Project) More than 2 Tardies a Quarter Make-Up Work Extra Tutoring/Re-teaching Retake Unacceptable Behavior Academic Integrity: In a foreign language class, it is particularly important that certain resources are used and others avoided. Online (www.leo.org) and paper dictionaries are acceptable resources to use on a daily basis; however, due to the high level of inaccuracy, online translators are not acceptable.
