ANCIENT GREECE A. Ancient Greece is located on the continent of Europe near the Mediterranean Sea and Aegean Sea. Greece is located in the Northern and Eastern Hemispheres. B. Physical characteristics (the land) of Greece include a warm, dry climate; rocky, mountainous land that made farming hard. Farmers had to adapt by using terraced farming. Farmers grew olives and grapes. The land also made it hard for people to travel and to communicate to one another. Because of this, the Greeks formed independent city states like Athens and Sparta. Trading took place on the Mediterranean Sea. C. Human characteristics (the people) of Greece include they were farmers, ship builders, and traders. They were master ship builders (economic specialization). They traded their goods with ancient Egypt (economic interdependence). They believed in many gods and goddesses. D. Greek contributions included Architecture (building design)- many buildings in the United States are modeled after buildings in Ancient Greece like the Parthenon. They had 3 types of columns (Doric, Ionic, Corinthian) that they used on many of their buildings. the Olympics (every 4 years), Arts and theater and a direct democracy (citizens vote). The government in the United States is a democracy, modeled after the Greeks.
