Welcome to Economics with Mr. Vereb! This paper will serve as your guide and introduction to
our class for the semester.
Overview:
This course will give the students an opportunity to understand the importance of
choice. Economics is the constant struggle of trying to use limited resources and allocating
goods and services to satisfy unlimited needs. This course will show how scarcity and choice
impact the economic decision of individuals, families, and communities.
The student will describe how choices may translate into opportunity costs and result
into trade-offs which determine which goods and services are provided. Money, the role of
banks and the impact of interest rate, budgeting, savings and the use of loans and credit cards
on individual financial decision making will be discussed.
The students will demonstrate an understanding of markets and the role of demand and
supply in determining price and resource allocation. The course will also cover the sources of

income and growth in a free market enterprise and the role of government and corporations in
the operation of markets. Students will examine the selected indicators of economic health and
determine the well-being of countries around the world. The stock market, GNP, international
trade and current economic issues will be examined. Writing and some minor mathematics will
be incorporated into the curriculum for all students.
In my classroom you are significant. Economics describes how different people in
different places make different decisions about different things. In order to learn about those
various decisions every student has something valuable to contribute. I want you to be
successful, and I invite your feedback on how I can best help you reach success. I will do
everything I can to help you reach success, but in return I expect you to be prepared to work,
think, try, and seek help when needed.
Materials for Success
All students need a notebook, folder, and writing utensil.
Expectations
Follow all rules as prescribed in the Park View High School agenda/handbook (pages 10-15).
In terms of behavior, my only and most serious expectation is that you will treat everyone the
way that you would like to be treated. If students are having issues with appropriate conduct
and interaction, then they may participate in a retraining clinic with Mr. Vereb to practice the
necessary life skills that need to be reviewed. Retraining clinics are held Monday – Friday at
8AM or 4PM.
Grading
Your grade will be determined from a number of assignments: homework, classwork, projects,
essays, activities, tests, quizzes, and notes. Reading assessments will be given as needed and
may be announced or unannounced. Longer, more in depth tests will be given at the
conclusion of each unit. Grades will be accumulated through the following assessments:
Unit Tests
Quizzes
Projects (Individual or Group)
100 points
15-30 points
30 points
*These are approximate divisions only. Reapportionment may occur without notice.
**No Extra Credit
***Retake opportunities will be available on all tests

Retake Opportunities
In an effort to reach the goal of content mastery, all students will have the opportunity to
retake Unit assessments (and chapter quizzes, but for modified scores) if mastery has not been
proven. Retakes are OPTIONAL, but highly recommended.
● Students may be asked to prove they deserve a second chance in order to do a
retake. Retakes will not be allowed until earned through enrichment activities. This
may come in the form of additional enrichment assignments. The fact is, studying hard
and learning the right way to retain information is crucial and will result in better
outcomes.
● Retakes may not be in the same form as the original assessment. For example, a
multiple choice section may have been failed, but an essay question may be assigned as
the retake opportunity.
● Unit Retake grades will replace original grades in the grade system. Students may
retake unit assessments/portions of assessments several times if they wish (with
teacher discretion). Each new opportunity will replace the former grade in the system.
Retakes will happen during before/afterschool appointments.
● Chapter Quiz retakes will be allowed but will only offer a partial point recovery.
Mastery on a Chapter Section of the Unit Assessment will completely replace that
Chapter Quiz Score if it is higher.
ACADEMIC HONESTY
Increased problems concerning plagiarism and/or cheating has resulted in a strict code
of academic honesty to which all students will be held accountable. Behaviors considered
academic dishonesty (see pledge) will result in a zero for the assignment and a written letter in
your school file.
ABSENCES & MAKE-UP
It is your responsibility to get any missing work and/or notes when you return to school.
Late assignment make-up time is the number of days missed plus one. Check the calendar
and/or class website to see what you missed. All tests and quizzes must be made up
before/after school within one week of the excused absence. Please schedule a time as needed
to complete these tasks.
I have read the above information and will commit to excellence in all endeavors while in
Economics.
