STAGE I – DESIRED RESULTS
LESSON TOPIC (Module, if applicable):
This week students will start a new unit of individual
freedoms granted to us by the government. The first freedom
will be the freedom of religion.
BIG IDEAS:
UNDERSTANDING GOALS (CONCEPTS):
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: What is the history of religious
freedom in the United States? Why is religious freedom
important? How are the laws regarding freedom of religion
played a role in shaping our country? Why did the writers of
the Constitution include guarantees of religious freedom?
Students will understand: Students will understand the history of religious
freedom in America. Students will understand why religious freedom is
important. Students will understand the idea of religious freedom in the USA.

STUDENT OBJECTIVES (COMPETENCIES/OUTCOMES):
Students will be able to: SWBAT analyze the history of freedom of
religion and see how it still applies in today’s world. SWBAT
understand and demonstrate their knowledge of why religious
freedom is important.
STAGE II – ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE
PERFORMANCE TASK: In-class activities focusing on
comprehension knowledge of the material will also be
assessed. New vocabulary will be introduced and practiced.
Composition book completion, and short writing samples as
well as in-class reading participation will also be assessed.
Students will take a chapter test with open notes.
