STAGE I – DESIRED RESULTS
LESSON TOPIC (Module, if applicable):
This week students will focus on Local Government and how
it affects their lives. Students will learn about key figures in
their local government and the responsibilities of the elected
officials.
BIG IDEAS:
UNDERSTANDING GOALS (CONCEPTS):
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
What does local government do? How do local government
services affect me and my community? What is the difference
between the city council-mayor plan and the city council-city
manager plan? Why are private community groups necessary?
Why is their a local office to help people with special needs
Students will understand:
Students will understand the organization and functions of the local
government. Students will understand the various community services that
local governments provide.

STUDENT OBJECTIVES (COMPETENCIES/OUTCOMES):
Students will be able to: SWBAT understand the organization and
functions of the local government. SWBAT demonstrate their
knowledge of different community services by presenting the
information researched about their own local government.
STAGE II – ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE
PERFORMANCE TASK: Students will be assessed by their
research of their local government. In-class activities
focusing on comprehension knowledge of the material will
also be assessed. New vocabulary will be introduced and
practiced. Composition book completion, and short writing
samples as well as in-class reading participation will also be
assessed.
