Rosa Lee Carter Elementary Ashburn, VA December 1, 2015 grace.adams@lcps.org Ms. Adams’s Classroom Newsletter I hope that everyone had a very refreshing Thanksgiving Break. The students of Room 32 came back to school on Monday happy and eager to keep learning. We have such a fabulous group of students! Even though there are only three weeks of school in December, we are looking forward to a lot of great activities to pack in before break! Please remember that although the weather is getting colder, we will still be going outside for recess unless the temperature is below freezing. Make sure your student is dressing warmly in preparation for that weather! Throughout the month, we will be extending our multiplication unit by looking at its inverse—division. We are exploring how multiplication and division are related, and how knowing your multiplication facts can actually help you solve division problems! As with multiplication, it is extremely important that your child is practicing their division facts. Knowing the facts to 12 will help your child succeed in our division unit. Please refer to the division flash cards I sent in the Weekly Update, or use other division games to have your child practice these facts. Happy studying! These can seem overwhelming without a purpose to use them for! Here are some ideas on how to use those extra resources to support your child at home. 1. RAZ Kids: RAZ Kids is an online reading program that chooses books for individual reading levels. Many of you are familiar with this program, but did you know that it helps students practice comprehension? Use the quizzes at the end to practice retelling the story and monitoring for understanding. 2. MobyMax: MobyMax is an online resource for many subject areas, including reading and math. Did you know that this website includes many different math content areas—excellent for review of topics? This resources is an opportunity for your child to brush up on adding money or subtracting with regrouping skills, as well as math content we are currently working on (multiplication and division). Log-in information and the link can be found on my website. Pictured Above: Room 32 was wowed by Mr. Hanke’s demonstrations of the center of gravity. Mr. Hanke is a science teacher at Rock Ridge High School who shares his expertise and passion for science with our third grade students. This was his second visit, and we look forward to inviting him back to our classroom!
