Industry mentors gave the following comments to open-ended questions.
13. Additional Comments (Strengths, weaknesses, work habits, objectives accomplished, commendable achievements, etc.)
social media and tasting room organization. Made contacts in the community with our product. Was an
excellent ambassador for XXXXX Cellars.
none
XXXXX was always professional with customers, regardless of how difficult the customer mght be. She
helped coordinate and train volunteers every Saturday night for concerts. She learned how to track wine
inventory. She helped us update our company policy book. Any task I assigned her, she jumped right in
and applied herself.
It is important for XXXXX to remember all the different aspects that make a business run successfully. At
any job there are tasks expected to be done that are listed in a job description or taught during training.
Any of these should be completed without being asked. For the most part, sitting or being on a cell phone
for personal reasons is not at all accepted when on the clock. We run a pretty relaxed environment and
gave XXXXX a lot of room to take initiative and prove herself. We would have liked to see her take more
initiative and have an attitude that indicated she wanted to be here.
XXXXX was very involved during her internship and it showed in the updates she produced. She was able to
add flavor, like the Tour de France being in town, that helped round out the overall blog.
Given the task of organizing the foreign affairs of the XXXXX Wine Fair, XXXXX has completed a tremendous
task exceptionally
XXXXX's strengths are her communication skills, comprehensive technical wine knowledge, enthusiasm for
the wine industry, work ethic, reliability, ability to learn quickly, problem solving skills, and interpersonal
skills. I would say the only weakness noted would be that she comes across as shy which is tough in a
relationship-building industry like this, however she is quick to warm up! XXXXX has excellent work habits
of arriving on time (or early!) complete all necessary duties and find time for additional projects. I would
commend her for the relationships she built with customers and her team members as well as her seamless
integration into multifaceted world of YYYYY Cellars.

14. What additional recommendations would you make to the student and/or the University to better prepare the
students for a career in this area?
Love it if I could have a kid like this every year. I will be interested in the future to see if XXXX is the
exception or the norm of kids coming out of the program. It has been my experience that young college
graduates have a whole new idea of expectations in the real world and XXXXX was a breath of fresh air
reminding me of myself with work ethic, desire to please, professionalism, and overall work ethic
Work in different positions of any level of the wine business in Washington to have a stronger
understanding of the many dynamics.
The only recommendation I would make would be for greater writing skills - particularily with regards to
marketing and pr. I would strongly suggest that a writing for public relations course be required.
The student was well prepared regarding wine knowledge. The weaknesses were primarily found in overall
work ethic.
The blog could have offered more detailed information about wine and wine-making or wine culture.
The way XXXXX has preformed we are more then willing to accept more interns from CWU in the future.
My only recommendations for XXXXX would be to keep up with what she's doing. She has an excellent
work ethic and ability to learn which makes her a valuable employee. Those things are hard to teach but
incredibly useful in this industry when we are all wearing so many hats. Recommendations to the
university would be to continue the comprehensive curriculum because there is so much more to the wine
industry than wine alone. All of the graduates we have employed from the program are excited and
enthusiastic about everything from grape to glass which is what you need to be to get your foot in the
door. Keep up the good work, Washington wine thanks you!
