Study Sheet, Chapter 3 1 Art Appreciation Study Sheet – Chapter 3, Line, Shape, and Mass Vocabulary: Elements of Design – the art elements artists use to make their artwork. They are: line, shape, color, value, form, space, and texture, mass. (Some text list time, motion & light.) Lines – marks that form the design on the surface. Contour line – a line that surrounds the edge of a form, limiting the form and distinguishing one area from another. Hatching – a technique used in drawing and linear forms of printmaking, in which lines are placed in parallel series to darken the value of an area. Crosshatching is drawing one set of hatching over another in a different direction so that the lines cross; this darkens the area. Example: Rembrandt, Bearded Man Looking Down. Calligraphy – the art of beautiful writing; the flowing use of line. Study questions: 1. Line is our basic means for recording and symbolizing ideas, observations, and feelings. Line is a primary means of visual communication. 2. Implied lines suggest visual connections; this is evident between the implied line between the eyes in Chagall’s I and the Village. 3. Compositional lines are often hidden lines within a composition that guide the artist in arranging the elements in a specific design. Examples: Giotto, Lamentations and Leonardo da Vinci, The Virgin of the Rocks 4. A contour line surrounds the edge of a form and distinguishes one area from another. 5. Crosshatching is the technique of giving value to drawings by using parallel lines drawn across each other. 6. An imaginary line in an artwork is known as implied line.
