A Victory Won A Poem for Student Convocation By Dr. W. Wayne VanHorn Christian Studies and Philosophy August 18, 2007 Also read 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 I love you mom and dad, I appreciate all you’ve done. To mold me into a caring person Mixing responsibility and fun. I know your mind is racing With uncertainties and fears. You wonder if I was listening As you taught me all those years. Now I’m starting college And our paths will part a while. You’re anxious about my leaving Though you hide it with a smile. Yet, we all knew this day would come Indeed we know it’s best… For me to test my wings and fly alone So I have to leave the nest. You entrust me now to others Who will help me as I grow, With knowledge and maturation And life skills I need to know. I will become an adult here And learn to stand tall and free, But it’s only because you’ve loved me so And have given yourselves to me. When my last course is finished And my college days are done. You will discover you’ve not lost a child, But rather a victory won.
