Please include the most recent version of your department ’s mission statement. A. Mission:

The Counseling Center supports the academic mission of the University of Louisville by providing quality mental health services and programs to assist students in achieving their personal and educational goals. We also contribute to the broader mission of the University by providing training to new mental health professionals.

B. Department Overview:

Please include a three to six sentence narrative that captures the essence of your department’s services, programs and activities.

The Counseling Center provides short-term mental health counseling (individual and group) for all currently enrolled students. We also serve as a practicum site the Counseling Psychology program at

U of L, the Clinical Psychology program at Spalding University, and an internship site for Kent School of

Social Work. We also provide testing services for learning disabilities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. In addition, the Counseling Center provides consultation and outreach to the campus community.

C. Strategic Goals (12-13) &

Major Accomplishments:

Please list your department ’s strategic goals from this past year and address the progress towards achieving each goal and/or major accomplishments and activities with respect to each goal.

GOALS MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS & ACTIVITIES

 Ongoing. Funding needed for computers in the waiting area.

GOAL #2: Complete the conversion of all current records from paper to electronic files

GOAL #3:

GOAL #4:

Update the CC website

 Ongoing, the process is taking longer than anticipated.

 Ongoing. Some updates have been completed

 Rate of return was low, but overall responses were positive.

GOAL #5:

Please add more space for goals as your department’s activities warrant.

D. Points of Pride (2012-13):

Please list three to five

‘points of pride’ for your department from the past year. This can include initiatives, programs or recognitions.

Short Title

Updated DVR Equipment

Direct Clinical Services

Practicum site for U of L and

Spalding University

EFT Regional Workshop

LD/ADHD Testing Services

 Completed, however, the location of one of the offices is not ideal.

Description

The new equipment allows practicum supervisors to provide live supervision without being the room and can be viewed on the computer from the supervisor’s office. Students can also review their session via the computer.

Scheduled 7435 appointments, 976 new intakes, 139 emergency/crisis appointments and 100 hours of Outreach programs/events.

Provided 710 hours of supervision for practicum students and graduate assistants

One day workshop by Dr. Rhonda Goldman which focused on helping therapist work with the problematic emotional processes that drive problems that bring clients into therapy. There were 30 participants that attended from as far away as Nashville.

The CC provided 24 ADHD and 4 LD assessments. The funds generated from the assessments were used to purchase assessment protocols, upgrade the DVR equipment and fund professional development activities.

E. Collaborative Efforts:

Please add more space for additional points of pride as warranted. .

Please describe any initiatives, programs or activities that your department has collaborated with one or more other University and/or community partners.

Short Title

Collaboration with Health Promotions. Yoga was used as a method to reduce stress and anxiety

Collaboration with Health Promotions to help identify gaps in the existing efforts to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Collaboration with Dr. Jesse Owen, ECPY. A two year study which involved 200 students receiving counseling. The study aimed to understand the clients’ reaction to psychotherapy. See Appendix for summary of the outcomes.

Please add more space for collaborative efforts as your department’s activities warrant.

F. Continuous Improvement:

Please list areas which have been cited (either through formal or informal assessment and evaluation) as requiring additional attention.

1. Cite a SINGLE area, program, service or function that was identified through a formal assessment (i.e.: focus group, survey, tracking, etc.) as needing improvement or warranting additional attention.

Intake wait time has improved, but still problematic. During peak times, the average wait time is 14 days.

2. Which assessment mechanism(s) (i.e.: focus group, survey, tracking, etc.) assisted your department in identifying the need for improvement?

Assessment includes feedback from counseling center staff, students and the greater campus community. The wait times are easily identified with Titanium.

3. Specifically, what did the assessment’s findings reflect that resulted in enhancements to this area, program, service or function?

We have moved to short-term counseling 8-10 sessions during the semester and emergency appointments on a daily basis. While these changes have helped, it has not resolved the issue.

4. What has your department done/plan to do to address this area, program, service or function? Please be as specific as possible.

Review the entire intake process and how intakes are scheduled.

Explore the development of the triage or walk-in system of intake.

Explore how to reduce intake wait-time and still provide services to ongoing clients.

G. Diversity & Inclusion:

Short Title

LGBT Therapy Group

Please describe any initiatives, programs or activities that your department undertook that supported diversity and inclusion
