Article I-II: establishes peace between the nations
Article III-IV: deals with the settlement of occupation during war and withdrawal of
US from Mexico
Article V-VII: establishes the boundaries between the nations and agreement that
both nations will have use of the waterways for commercial use (trade)
**The Gila River & Rio Grande were the boundaries set as the border HOWEVER, the
US makes the Gadsden Purchase which gave the US all of the Gila River.
Article VIII-IX: Citizenship-those living in the territory being acquired by the US
would have a choice of staying or leaving within the new borders of Mexico BUT if
they stayed they would be a citizen of the US
**NA were not given citizenship ---- When did NA get the right to vote?
** citizenship= having the rights guaranteed in the country of residence
Article X: REMOVED
LANDGRANTS THAT HAD BEEN GIVEN TO RESIDENTS IN THE AQUIRED
TERRITORY WOULD BE PROTECTED AND REMAIN IN THE RESIDENT’S
POSSESSION
** US Congress removed article X before it approved the Treaty which meant those
landgrants were vulnerable and unprotected.
