ELA Middle College Phil Shaw and David Yockel Year 2 Theme: Community Participation DAY 2 Saturday, February 16th , 1-2:30pm College & Citizenship - Round-up—(Students will read the poems they wrote about “what it means to be an American citizen”) [15-20 minutes] - Watch a section of Obama’s 2013 State of the Union address. How does this relate to the rights and responsibilities of citizenship? (Global/Local discussion.)[20 minutes] - In groups, students will define, for themselves, “college citizenship” and generate a list of the “rights and responsibilities” of a college student. [20 minutes] - Discussion of rights/responsibilities of College Students (Show Miami Dade College handout) - What is the link between the idea of “democratic citizenship” and “college citizenship?” Does college help make you a “more productive member of society” as well as prepare you for a chosen career? Is there a difference? - College students have an increased level of freedom. But with that freedom comes increased accountability. Describe the two as they relate to academic study. How are these two things supposed to be balanced? What are some advantages/disadvantages? [30 minutes] Homework: Write your “Personal College Mission Statement” (assignment sheet to be handed out in class)
