English 11A
TODAY’S OBJECTIVES:
Students will examine how the author’s purpose affects
his/her use of language and choice of form (MCPS 3.4.2)
AGENDA:
1. Complete warmup #12 on the following quote: “Many times
I have failed, but I am not a failure. I have made mistakes,
but I am not a mistake.” Do you agree with this quote? Are
mistakes acceptable in your life? Why or why not?
2. Finish your Supersize Me essay and turn in by end of period.
3. With your clock reading buddy, read ”In Praise of the F
Word” by Mary Sherry
(http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/1991/05/05/inpraise-of-the-f-word.html). Determine what is her
thesis/argument. What evidence/examples does she use to
support her argument (think ethos, pathos, logos)?
4. As a class, read story “Salvation” by Langston Hughes
and analyze purpose. Then write a ½-1 page
reflection about the following topic:
Have you ever failed to live up to the
expectations of someone else (parents, teachers,
coaches, minister, etc.) What happened? How
have you changed as a result of that experience?
