Get some fresh air, clear your mind—even bring a friend! Worcester maintains more than 1,215 acres of parkland, encompassing 53 parks. ELM PARK With 60 acres of land, Elm Park is one of the oldest public parks in the nation and a beautiful setting for an invigorating walk. It's about a mile around the whole park, & they usually shovel in the winter so it's accessible even during the colder months. To extend the walk & cross a few items off of your shopping list, you can take a stroll down Highland St. and check out stores like Unique Boutique, Saori Worcester, etc. Location: In center of Park Avenue, Highland, Russell and Elm Streets. There's also a playground for kids, tennis courts, basketball, and winter skating! There are numerous picnic areas and hiking trails, too. QUINSIGAMOND PARK/LAKE PARK Take a walk on this park’s 78 acres of land, which features a scenic view of Lake Quisigamond. Bring a friend and watch the rowers or local ball players. WACHUSETT RESERVOIR The 4,135-acre reservoir is just north of Worcester. Start at the Old Church for short hikes or further north for longer hikes. Callahan has seven miles of marked trails and is used for activities including fishing, hiking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing. Within the park are nearly 100 acres of open fields. Walk on wooded trails & open fields, and there’s even a pond with a beach-type area where dogs can play and swim. A unique natural landmark, Purgatory Chasm runs for a quarter of a mile between granite walls rising as high as 70 feet. The Chasm is believed to have its origin in the sudden release of dammed-up glacial meltwater near the end of the last Ice Age, approx. 14,000 years ago. The Freedom Trail is a 2.5 mile red-brick walking trail that leads you to 16 nationally significant historic sites. You can decide whether to walk the trail yourself or have a 90 minute guided tour with an American History character. (Personally, I’ve done this trail and recommend beginning with a tour if you’ve never done it before. It was so interesting, and even though it doesn’t go through the whole trail you can just continue the trail after the tour –there’s so much more to walk throughout the city!) Bikeway covers 48 miles between Worcester, Mass to Providence, RI.
