Facilities Maintenance & Construction
Sign Painter
Job Code: 8868 – Contract Classified
Department Introduction:
Facilities Maintenance and Facilities Construction are responsible for general maintenance, repair, alterations, and
renovations of all campus facilities including building interiors, exteriors, and grounds.
Job Purpose:
Perform journey-level work in the layout, fabrication and maintenance of signs for exterior or interior use.
Duties and Responsibilities:
 Utilizing computerized sign programs, layout and design signs for lettering and graphics to be cut from selfadhesive vinyl, including scan and digitize graphics, weed and mask vinyl lettering and graphics, and apply vinyl
to various surfaces and substrates
 Utilizing computerized engraving programs, layout and design signs, plates and plaques
 Maintain and sharpen engraving tips
 Utilizing silk screen processes, fabricate and prepare signs, including screen setup, run and clean up, producing
rubylith stencils and screen positives, and exposure and washout of photo process screens
 Perform hand-lettering and rendering graphics on signs, vehicles, banners, walls and glass
 Apply gold leaf for surface gilding and glass gilding
 Mix paints and match colors as required
 Prepare and use paper pounce patterns
 May assist in cost estimates for signage projects
 Operate motor vehicle and transport materials
 Keep leads and supervisors informed of project status/work progress, and needed materials and equipment
 Communicate and coordinate with other Facilities Services’ shops and Engineering Services to facilitate work
 Know and comply with occupational health and safety regulations that apply to work actions and conduct on the
job, including Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) instructions, and the use of personal protective equipment
whenever required
 Follow all University and Facilities Services’ policies and procedures
 Interact with clients, coworkers, management, staff and students in a courteous and professional manner, with
particular attention to excellent customer service
 Attend all required meetings and trainings
 May instruct semiskilled workers
 Perform other duties as assigned
 Regular and predictable attendance is required

Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Three years of experience/training in the sign painting trade
 Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies
 Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required

Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of
chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures
Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Demonstrated ability to take direction, work well with others and as a member of a team, and in providing
excellent customer services
 Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills
 Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety & Health Act) and OSHA
(Occupational Safety & Health Act) regulations
 Demonstrated success utilizing computerized sign and engraving technology; familiarity with engraving materials;
and/or knowledge of standards of the sign industry and American Disabilities Act
Conditions of Employment:
 Valid WA State driver’s license
 Must be able to work in a smoke-free environment
 May be required to accept variable work shift
 Approved footwear must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job
 Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job
 Ability to lift and move heavy materials is required
 Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using appropriate safety procedures
 A tuberculosis (TB) test is required for work assignments in nonhuman primate areas and in the UW Medical
Center
 A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire
