FACILITIES SERVICES Job Description Facilities Maintenance & Construction Sheet Metal Mechanic Job Code: 8866 – Contract Classified Sheet Metal Mechanic Alterations Department Introduction: Facilities Maintenance and Facilities Construction are responsible for general maintenance, repair, alterations, and renovations of all campus facilities including building interiors, exteriors, and grounds. Job Purpose: Under the direction of the supervisor and lead, provide skilled labor in the construction, maintenance, and repair of campus buildings and grounds metallic subsystems. Work with metallic flat stock, formed and/or extruded components to maintain or enhance the functionality of the campus buildings and grounds. Duties and Responsibilities: Design, fabricate and install diverse components and systems fabricated from metal Construct sinks, counters, trays, and pans from diverse materials, including, but not limited to, stainless steel, galvanized mild steel, aluminum, copper, brass and other materials Construct and install shelving, casework, and metal architectural components such as decking and roofing Construct and install HVAC components, fixtures, and fittings Construct and install metal buildings and architectural building components Work from blueprints, drawings or verbal instructions Design and fabricate complex metal structures, including stairs, railings, ramps, tools and components; ensure compliance with building, structural, welding, safety, and ADA codes and redesign as necessary Work with leads to discuss any proposed project changes before construction Interpret mechanical systems operations and technical specification manuals Weld common sheet metal materials using Shield Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), soldering, brazing, plasma arc cutting and oxyacetylene cutting Keep leads and supervisors informed of project status/work progress, needed materials and equipment Operate all shop equipment, including shears, breaks, drill presses, grinders, punches, hydraulic presses, and all other sheet metal equipment to fabricate fittings and casework Operate machinery such as fork-lifts, scissor-lifts, and high rangers Load and unload materials and supplies Operate vehicles such as UW vans and trucks to transport tools, equipment and personnel to various job sites May instruct semiskilled workers Communicate and coordinate with other Facilities Services shops and other business partners such as Engineering Services, Design Services, Capital Projects Office and UW Technology to facilitate work Know and comply with occupational health and safety regulations that apply to work actions and conduct on the job, including Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) instructions, and the use of personal protective equipment whenever required Comply with all University and Facilities Services policies and procedures, Facilities Maintenance & Construction (FMC) protocols, i.e. Individual Accountability Protocols (IAP) Support all management directives and the vision and values of FMC Participate in and follow through with FMC process improvement initiatives (Balanced Scorecard, Lean, Ideas Systems) Actively participate in meetings and training as scheduled Provide excellent customer service through effective, courteous and professional interactions with clients, colleagues and the campus community\ Perform other duties as assigned Regular and predictable attendance is required Core Competencies: Demonstrate personal integrity and trustworthiness 03/18/15 Page 1 of 2 Manage stressful situations and changing priorities effectively Anticipate, recognize and resolve problems Be responsible and accountable Use organizational skills and provide attention to details Maintain a positive, optimistic and success-oriented attitude Exercise professional demeanor, which includes being tactful and courteous Exhibit a professional work ethic Continuously promote a safe work environment Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge: Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a sheet metal mechanic, or full journey status as a sheet metal mechanic in a union, or four years’ applicable work experience Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis Demonstrated successful ability in taking direction, working well with others and as a member of a team Demonstrated excellence in effective verbal and written communication skills Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge: Weld and cut all types of metals including heavy plate and structural steel Sheet Metal Welding Certification by Washington Association of Building Officials Structural Welding Certification by the Washington Association of Building Officials Familiarity with a wide-variety of architectural envelope work Familiarity with SMACNA (Sheet Metal and Air conditioning contractors’ National Association) construction standards and design guide Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety & Health Act) and OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Act) regulations Demonstrated successful experience with basic computer technology Conditions of Employment: Valid driver’s license recognized by the state of Washington Regular and predictable attendance is required May be required to accept variable work shift Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using approved safety precautions Must be able to work in a smoke-free environment Ability to lift and move heavy material may be required Approved footwear must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job A tuberculosis (TB) test is required for work assignments in nonhuman primate areas and in the University of Washington Medical Center A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire 03/18/15 Page 2 of 2
