Facilities Maintenance & Construction
Electrician, Facilities Construction

Department Introduction:
Facilities Maintenance and Facilities Construction are responsible for general maintenance, repair, alterations, and
renovations of all campus facilities including building interiors, exteriors, and grounds.
Job Purpose:
Facilities Construction (FC) is the University of Washington’s in-house provider for construction and remodel work that, by
statute, must not exceed $90K for multi trade work and $45K for single trade work. Under the direction of the supervisor
and lead, perform journey-level electrical work in the maintenance, repair and construction of a wide variety of complex
and sophisticated electrical systems up to 600 volts in over 220 University facilities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
 Perform work which includes, but is not limited to, inspection, alteration, repair and installation of:
o The retrofit and installation of all types of indoor and outdoor lighting systems for energy management,
efficiency and seismic reinforcement
o Circuitry (e.g., dedicated, branch, appliance, control and associated devices)
o All types of raceway systems (e.g., rigid, EMT, IMC, PVC, surface, flexible, sealtite and explosion proof)
o Panel boards, load centers, roll out and molded case circuit breakers
o Transformers, switchgear, distribution and service equipment, safety and transfer switches
o Ground fault systems
 Construct or modify electrical systems from blueprints, schematics, and diagrams
 Develop cost estimates for installation and repairs
 Operate machinery such as forklifts, scissor-lifts, and highrangers
 Load and unload materials and supplies
 Operate vehicles such as UW vans and trucks to transport tools, equipment and personnel to various job sites
 Keep leads and supervisors informed of project status and work progress, required project materials and
equipment
 Work with lead to discuss any proposed project changes before construction
 Communicate and collaborate with other Facilities Services shops and other business partners such as Design
Services, Capital Projects Office and UW Technology to facilitate work
 Know and comply with occupational health and safety regulations specific to the work and conduct on the job,
including Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) instructions, Hazard Review Checklists (HRCs) and the use of
personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
 Comply with all University and Facilities Services policies and procedures, Facilities Maintenance & Construction
(FMC) protocols, i.e. Individual Accountability Protocols (IAP)
 Support all management directives and the vision and values of FMC
 Participate in and follow through with FMC process improvement initiatives (Balanced Scorecard, Lean, Ideas
Systems)
 Actively participate in meetings and training as scheduled
 Provide excellent customer service through effective, courteous and professional interactions with clients,
colleagues and the campus community
 Perform other duties as assigned
 Regular and predictable attendance is required

Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as an electrician; OR full journey status as an electrician in a union;
OR four years' applicable work experience
 Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis
 Knowledge of National Electrician Code (NEC) and all other local codes and ordinances
 Demonstrated successful ability in taking direction, working well with others and as a member of a team
 Demonstrated excellence in effective verbal and written communication skills
 Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies
 Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required
 Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of
chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures

Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety & Health Act) and OSHA
(Occupational Safety & Health Act) regulations
 Experience in electrical maintenance or alterations of institutional, industrial and/or commercial environments
 Experience in troubleshooting and repairing control circuitry, such as lighting and heating, ventilation and air
conditioning, and in utilizing a variety of testing equipment to monitor and maintain electrical systems and
equipment
 Demonstrated successful experience with basic computer technology
Conditions of Employment:
 Washington State journey electrician’s license and or evidence of certification
 Valid driver's license recognized by the state of Washington
 Commercial Driver’s License may be required
 Must be able to work in a smoke-free environment
 May be required to accept variable work shift
 Approved footwear must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job
 Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job
 Ability to lift and move heavy materials is required
 Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using appropriate safety procedures
 Must be able to work outside under all weather conditions
 A tuberculosis (TB) test is required for work assignments in nonhuman primate areas and in the UW Medical
Center
 A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire
