MoCAN Conference Call Child Care Work Plan Discussion October 1, 2012 Attendees: Deborah Markenson, Lynn Cole, Cindy DeBlauw, Barbara Keene, Robin Gammon, Mary Trelthorst, Ann McCormack Agenda Purpose of call—to review current work plan and identify next steps for next 1-2 year work plan. Review MOCAN's vision and mission.i Review results and outcomes from last year's collaborative MOCAN actions 1. Increase policy makers education on key child care n/pa issues No formal efforts have been made to educate key policy makers. Barbara and Ann have meet with Region 7 staff to discuss I Am Moving, I Am Learning. Policy makers can include legislators and state/federal agency staff. Counties all have contracts with DHSS. 25% of the child care consultant contracts have to be for obesity prevention. This requirement has been in place for the past 2 years. The training for the nurse consultants is provided by DHSSCFNA/CHW Bureaus. Process measures (#trainings/people trained) are maintained. 2. Increase number of child cares that adopt and implement policies/environmental changes related to n/pa Post IMIL training assessments are being conducted to measure impact on physical activity in trained child cares. Anticipate results next summer (July 2013). 3. Other? Next Year Planning Discussion Questions: Should we have separate action plans for schools and child care? Yes. At MOCAN meetings schools/child care group could meet together but also individually. What time frame do we want to establish for the work plan for? 1 year vs. 2 years (the balance of the life span of the current strategic plan.ii) The group will create a 2 year plan with milestones that will be reviewed quarterly. What do we want to see as outcomes or results for our collaborative actions by the end of 1-2 years? Educational flier/policy for MO legislators on child care issues that need to be addressed. Developed plan/concepts that can be used to apply for funding to support child care providers. What would be most beneficial to you in your current position? The group will respond to this question at the October meeting. i The Missouri Council for Activity and Nutrition (MoCAN) is a coalition comprised of representatives from statewide and local agencies, institutions, organizations, other coalitions or individuals who work together to advance the goals and objectives of the statewide plan, Preventing Obesity and Other Chronic Diseases, Missouri’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Plan. Vision: The health and quality of life of Missourians will be significantly improved through healthy eating and active living. Mission: MoCAN fosters and supports healthy eating and active living through policy and environmental changes to measurably improve the health and quality of life of Missouri residents. ii Statewide Plan (2010-2015)—School and Child Care Section: 1. Promote ongoing training, assistance and resources for child care centers and education agency audiences on evidence-based strategies that promote healthy food choices and physical activity. 2. Enhance professional preparation for teachers, administrators and child care providers to enable them to support healthy nutrition and physical activity. 3. Identify and recognize successful approaches used in school and child care centers that enable students and staff to improve nutrition and physical activity practices.
