AP/Advanced Latin Class Sarah Whipple 918-231-1566 Sarah.whipple@jenksps.org sarahgr@sbcglobal.net Grades • Not weighted – a point is a point! • Schedule for the year is posted online • Tests • Students have the opportunity to do test corrections for credit back • I enter the test grades, but I will not have them count towards the overall grade until after I have entered test corrections • Tests are also curved (Advanced is on a separate curve from AP) Latin Club • $8 by Sept 30; $10 after Oct 1; $20 after Jan 1 – Student led organization – Activities depend on the interests of the students • Range from meeting to see latest Classically themed movie to dinner outings to Lazer Tag. – Some activities will require membership to participate, some will not • E.g. student must be a member of Latin Club to participate in Conventions. – Best way to not have to worry about it: • Join!!! Events for the year National Latin Exam Some day in the week of March 11th. • Jenks’ Latin curriculum based on NLE • Everyone should take the NLE – Students with an A or a B are expected to take NLE • $4 • Why take the NLE? – Cheap standardized test practice with no pressure – Scholarship money and prizes for high scores – Why not? They’ve been studying for it all year! ACTFL Latin Interpretive Reading Assessment (ALIRA) • Computer-adaptive assessment of Latin students’ ability to read for comprehension Latin-language texts • May or late April (depending on state testing) • Format: – One or two multiple-choice questions accompany each text and gather evidence of understanding of main ideas, supporting details, point-of-view, inferences, or text purpose – 50 minutes, taken during Latin class in school computer lab • $10 Classics Day Nov. 26 (Tuesday before Thanksgiving) • At OU, Leave at 7am, return around 4pm • Cost: around $35 • What is it? – Half a day in Norman, 9-noon – 30 minute sessions over history, mythology, Latin in the real world (e.g. medicine, Harry Potter, law) – We stop at Campus corner for lunch before we come back (not included in price) State Latin Convention • • • • March 28-29 Moore, Ok at West Moore High School All Latin club members are eligible to attend Competitions in – Academics – Athletics – Arts • Cost: $75-$100 – Will need chaperones!
